The chamber ceiling recedes, opens before them. Arthur thinks he could go far as the starless night, be swallowed there, in the belly of a great and terrible serpent. He is no-one; he is nothing. He needs another half to complete him, and without it, he is worse than dead.
Arthur hears of the Écrevisse, a cave that shows both a man’s greatest fear and deepest desire. To prove himself, he goes alone. Without Merlin. Yet the cave brings Merlin to him, as Arthur’s fears and desires become one.

Adam jumps when he sees the car pull up. Nigel still drives the same little white car with square doors. Adam pulls at the top button of his shirt—he hopes he hasn’t overdressed—and trots over to the car. He’s opened the door when he hears Nigel say, in that familiar husky voice, “Slow down, gorgeous! I want to get a look at you.”
