Samira was, in practice, the ED’s attack dog, and the attack dog of all the ED’s many and varied denizens. She was very good at her job, maybe because she looked so sweet and had such a reputation as a bleeding heart that no one expected her to be so fucking mean when the occasion called for it.
She was also, in practice, right now, like, while they all watched in frozen horror for the first twenty seconds of it happening, enduring a rare statistically significant loss - patient vs physician. She was, in this moment, leaning against the hub and bleeding through the gauze Dana and Robby were pressing against three different penetrating stab wounds on her anterior abdomen while Robby bellowed for a gurney and Dana hollered for security.

Summary
A King ought not have favourites.
Finwë, as King, strove to be even-handed, open-handed, as generous to his enemies as to his heirs. He dealt with Ingwë and Olwë both the same, friends of old and peers as no others were, and most assuredly did not show favour to any one faction of the Noldor above any other.
Finwë, as father and grandfather, failed in that regard, and in many others.

Summary
The mahtari had no names. The mahtari, they were told, needed no names. But Éomer had always thought of her as Olos. Mithrandir had it in a song once, when Éomer was so small that he still sat at his mother’s skirts in the Meduseld, and though he spoke no Elvish of any sort he remembered that word. He never knew what it meant, but the roundness of it on his tongue fit with the elegant curves of the mahtar he and Théodred rode together into battle.

How lucky am I. How lucky are we.
(Many years later, as she watches them age, as she watches her children grow old and grey, she will wonder if maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t so lucky after all. She knew, when she was younger, that she would live to see her children grow old; she hadn’t realized that she would live to see them die, too.)
