"You know, I always thought I'd live somewhere with lots of people around," Olruggio tells him. The wine in his vessel is a rich pink colour. Qifrey made them olives and cheese with cabroccoli wrapped in ham for a late-night snack, but the pleasure was in the making, not in the eating. He sips his own vessel, listening. "But it's really nice out here, isn't it? Peaceful. Good for focussing."
"I think you would be even more of a hermit, if you had the choice," Qifrey says. "Lost in your work for weeks on end."
Olruggio looks sheepish, rubbing the back of his neck with his free hand. "You're probably right. I never thought I'd be that kind of person, either… weird how much things change, isn't it?"
"And how much they stay the same," Qifrey murmurs.
A temporary fix-it.

Summary
San Lang is lucky in cards and tiles and dice. He is unlucky in life, because his boyfriend is too old for him and lies on the couch all day and doesn't even manage to go to the basement to put more money on the meter when the heating runs out, but San Lang doesn't like it when Xie Lian tells him that, even though it's true.

Summary
Xie Lian lets out a short noise, eyes widening when he sees the goods. On the shelves are neatly arranged body parts – first an ear, then fingers, then hands, one, two, three, four. An arm severed by the shoulder. He pulls down the other sheets and finds more of the same: mostly minor extremities, toes and fingers, but full feet and a few tongues too. They are all neatly severed, looking almost cured where they've been cut from the body. All of them look identical, and when he picks one of the hands up – Hua Cheng lets out a strangled noise behind him – it flips and twists easily in his grip, free of the paralysis of death.
"They're all from the same person," Xie Lian muses, studying the hand he's holding. "And they're preserved, or perhaps preserving themselves…? They don't have much spiritual energy, but–"
"Gege," Hua Cheng chokes out, "they're you."

"Oh, right. Let's see here…" Apollo clears his throat and exercises his Chords of Steel. "Yes, sir! The Blue Badger, sir! I returned him to the entrance before things got out of – wait, is this from State v Skye?"
"You recognise it?" Mr Wright says, surprised, while Trucy says,
"Stop going off-book, Mr Justice, it's not cute!"
"This isn't a theatre script, it's a court transcript! What the hell are you two up to?"
"Acting," says Trucy.
"Practicing," says Mr Wright.

Summary
The light through the curtains is hazier, almost dreamlike. In a dream, Olruggio’s face would be offset in stark relief—the one illogical point of focus in an otherwise blurry invention of his mind—but it’s not a dream, so Olruggio is hazy and warm and blurry too.
In a dream, when Olruggio touched him, the pleasure of it would be far away, guilt-laced, a memory of a memory of a hope. In a dream, his kiss would be fleeting, and his gentle affection the same.
But Qifrey’s never been lucky enough for that kind of safety. Olruggio is hot and solid and real against him. Olruggio touches him and all his nerve endings go alight. Olruggio holds him, and everything makes sense, and it’s hard to remember why it can’t last.

Qifrey, most days, had a hard time looking directly at Olruggio. If he looked right at Olruggio, he’d see the golden tassel, innocently attached to the point of Olruggio’s cap, and his stomach would twist until he felt like he was going to hurl. He bounced on the balls of his feet, suddenly feeling uncertain, because if Olruggio was the one crying it’d be even harder to look at him.

Olruggio rumbled. He could feel the vibration in his chest, from Olruggio’s to his own. “I’m not leaving you,” he said, voice gruff and fumbling. “I don’t — I want — you know I’ve wanted to hug you too, right?”
He sounded terribly embarrassed. Qifrey giggled, half in endearment and half mind-numbing relief. “Right,” he murmured, fingers relaxing by a fraction. “Sorry. You used to be so affectionate with your hands.”
