“Why don’t you run me through tonight’s plans?” Sylus says as he helps you into the car. “Since you’re my assistant now.”
“Arrival in fifteen, shake hands, and get an invite to cocktail party at eight,” you go down the list on your fingers after you buckle yourself in. “Mingle until we’re either invited to a backroom or someone can give us a name. And then we kick their asses.”
Sylus chuckles. He keeps his eyes on the road as he drives, shifting gear with one hand, the other lazily on the steering wheel. It’s effortlessly hot, and it annoys you a great deal. “There might be a few steps in between intelligence gathering and ass-kicking, but you got the gist of it. You are?”
“Your overworked assistant,” you say.
“Overworked?” Sylus asks, amused. “I don’t remember this being part of the script.”
“I’m simply trying to portray my role as realistically as possible.”
You moonlight as Sylus’ assistant. Things go a little differently than planned.

You’ve known Rafayel long enough to gather three things.
The first is that you’ve never seen him paint a portrait. More often than not he submits himself to the abstract, to smears of color that, according to him, never fully capture what he feels but at least get close enough. Sometimes, he allows himself a landscape here and there. But never a portrait. Never a person. No matter how much someone offers to pay him.
The second is that he refuses to wake up at dawn if he can help it. He’s never told you why. Just that there’s something about the sound of the morning bells that he hates.
The third is that there is a door in Mo Art Studio—just one—that Rafayel has never opened.

Most of the time, Rafayel doesn’t even need an introduction; such is the life of a world-renowned painter, after all. But there’s a difference between introducing him as Rafayel, the painter who you’re contractually obligated to keep safe, and Rafayel, the guy you’ve been seeing for a while, or even Rafayel, your boyfriend. Just like there’s a difference between introducing him to Tara and Simone, who caught him idling outside headquarters on more than one occasion and were dying to know about the guy whose car you keep getting into after work, and bringing him along as a plus-one to your friend’s wedding.
You don’t bring just anyone to a wedding.
