"We can save the people that are living, but most of the time we can't even do that. We should just—focus on ourselves. I can save you, and you can save me, and that's the most I'm sure of anything in this world."

    "That's not what you think." Mai sounds so certain of it that Maki can't help but open her eyes and stare at Mai's matching ones in the darkness and wonder, What do you see when you look at me?

    Instead, she says, "Well, you don't have any proof."

    Contrary to popular belief, Maki has always been the one chasing after Mai.

    It’s rare for her mother to act like this. Even at the age of six, Maki knows this. She knows there’s something wrong with her and Mai, and she knows that her mother cannot love them the same way someone like Naoya’s mother loves him. But she’s also only six, and so when her mother leaves her with crumbs of affection, Maki holds onto them without question.

    It’s ok if it’s only within the privacy of their own bathroom. It’s ok if she at least gets to feel her mother’s touch when she washes Maki’s back.
