Akira sets down the last box with a satisfied sigh. He still needs to unpack everything, but at least it’s all in the house.
In his house. He can’t help but grin at the thought. He’s finally out of his parents’ place, and he’s not even crammed into some matchbox apartment. No, he’s renting an entire house.
The rent for the place is unbelievably cheap—apparently the landlord’s had trouble keeping folks in the place. Something about it being haunted. Akira doesn’t really believe in ghosts, but honestly, he’d put up with one for rent this low.

He didn't react. He could see his eyes through the helmet darting around, slightly narrowed in thought.
"Akechi," Ren amended. His head whipped forward immediately.
Yeah, that's suspicious.
"How old are you?"
His posture tightened.
In this outfit, it was easier to tell how much skinnier he was, and how much muscle density had been lost.
And there were only so many ways someone could get shorter.

There are fading bruises on his face, a leftover from the interrogation no doubt, but otherwise his face is fine. “Joker,” Morgana calls hysterically, “are you saying that out of all people, the Black Mask is your soulmate?!”
Well. Ren is pretty sure it was the Black Mask who said the words, not him, but he still kind of ends up nodding, but also shrugging because what the fuck.
Soulmarks are found on everyone’s left arm; the first words your soulmate will say to you.
Usually, this would make meeting your soulmate a relatively easy task.
Ren doesn’t have that kind of luck.

Summary
The Phantom Thieves have nearly secured their route through Maruki's Palace. There’s only one section left: The Twilight Corridor. A paradise where everything is perfect, and everyone is always smiling.
In order to enter that place, the Thieves must first prove they've "completed orientation" and can be "happy." There are points, there is a scoreboard, and they’re locked together in an experimental space where wishes can be granted by simply saying them aloud. Everyone has to individually earn 100 happiness points, or no one is leaving.
So what is “happiness,” really? How does Maruki define happiness? What the hell is a quantifiable happiness point? Is there any way around this? Don’t these stupid kids realize this is a trick to get them to fall back into the thrall of Maruki’s reality? And why can’t Goro earn any fucking points?
(Or: I've been watching too much Dropout Game Changer and I’ve built an Akechi torture chamber.)

Expect for how Ren kept seeing Akechi out of the corner of his eyes even after he moved back to Inaba.

When Goro Akechi suddenly reappears in his life and the two are given a chance to rekindle their old flame, they cannot help but follow through. This is not without it difficulties, it's been so long since they've seen each other and Ren has changed so much... he fears that Goro make not like the man that he's become. He will, very much, as Ren will find out, but he cannot help but struggle along the way.

He was determined to never reach out to Akira again.
He lasted four years.

Convinced that moving back to Tokyo would solve all of his problems, he resigned himself to waiting out the remaining time until graduation. Then a former detective walks into his after-school job.
