Summary

“TK… Tyler?” He mumbles. The words taste bitter and metallic leaving his mouth. He’s not sure how it’s possible that he’s here. They’re too far from Austin for it to really be him. It has to be a dream, one last dream of his husband before he drifts off forever…

He should have been smarter, or maybe a little more scared. It was Carlos' hubris that got them into this situation in the first place, thinking he could take on intruders with nothing but the threat of his gun and de-escalation training.

When you stop breathing, it gets very hard to believe you can start again.
Time and space and sight narrows, distorts, and Carlos feels like a pinprick or a flea. He feels utterly, suffocatingly alone. He feels trapped. He grips the steering wheel desperately, tries to breathe, just breathe--
Breathe. Breathe, breathe.
His phone is in his hand. He doesn’t remember how it got there. There’s a droplet on the screen, probably a tear. He notices that he’s brought TK’s contact up.
How are you feeling? Carlos types. It takes him a moment to get it right because every time he tries to fix his typos his shaking hands betray him again.
TK is online in an instant. Same as ten minutes ago bb
Carlos laughs reading it, and that’s a very bad idea. All the snot and nothingness in his throat tangles together and leaves him choking.
And yet, rereading it, he thinks it’s helped. This is a little piece of evidence of TK.---

“I love you, Ty,” Carlos says finally, trying to breathe through the pain. “I love you, okay? If I could, I would’ve loved you forever. Don’t - don’t forget that.”
“Carlos.” TK sounds wary. “Why does that sound like goodbye?”
Carlos doesn’t want to answer that. He closes his eyes again as a tear drips down his cheek, leaving a damp trail that cuts through the dust and blood streaking his face. He’s so exhausted; he wants to sleep so fucking badly, wants to curl up in TK’s arms and forget about the pain currently riddling his entire body. He can hear TK yelling but he can’t find the words to respond, just twitches his fingers enough to pat the surface of the radio.

The fumes hit his vision in an instant and he slumps into his chair, the blue fabric over his eyes dissolving into a shimmering mass that reminds him spitefully of the Spanish sea they won’t be getting to see.---

“Carlos? Babe, hey, what happened? What happened?” The cool hands are supporting him, turning him over to sit him down against the counter, thumbs on his sweaty temples.
TK’s face is an incoherent blur to Carlos, skewed by the fever and the fresh pain.
“Carlos,” TK says again, not so much a prompt as a worried exhale. Fingers press briefly against the pulse point on the underside of Carlos’ jaw.
Even as he shudders at the comfort the touch brings him, Carlos says, “You promised you wouldn’t help.”
Through the whirling of his vision, he notes a painful brightness in TK’s eyes.
“Why won’t you let me look after you?” TK bursts.A suspiciously violent bug wipes Carlos out despite his best efforts to plough on through a twelve-hour shift. TK takes care of him.

Summary
This is a coda (fix-it) for episode 3.12/3.13, but not in the usual sense. I take the liberty to make some changes and rewrite the ending concerning Tarlos. I go in another direction and also take on TK's addiction. Given the latest developments concerning Carlos, as he still considers himself responsible for killing the guy after the prank call, he is seriously starting to doubt his abilities as a cop. Can TK help him avert a crisis? Slowly moving into episode 3.13. Not happy with how the writers handled Carlos' feelings and TK's reaction. COMPLETED
