Samira’s not entirely certain, but she’s pretty sure Jack gets pinker somehow. “I like keeping up with your work,” he says, swallowing hard. She nods. All she can do is nod. They pass a stall with postcards that neither of them ducks into to look more closely. The next stall is hand-beaded ornaments. There’s a family inside deliberating over which one would be the best gift. Jack speaks up again. “I think Columbia is lucky to have you, and they would be lucky to keep you. I think every emergency department in the country should be scrambling to win you over.”
“Every emergency department in the country?”
“I know we’re going to try our fucking hardest.”
