Amazing prose - one of those RD fics that look at the canon of Rimmer’s backstory, take away the jokes, and examine the tragedy that is left behind. Made me feel all emotional over Rimmer’s story again :,)
Would pair well with mintyfrog’s “One Good Thing,” for exploring Rimmer’s childhood and finding hope in the darkness.

Ace returns to Starbug! Well, Rimmer does. And he hasn't learned a damned thing during his travels, by the way, and you can't make him, because life lessons are about more than dressing up as some B-movie action hero and having tons of gay sex. Or a lack thereof.
Except maybe he doesn't mind the part where everyone likes Ace. And maybe it's better to keep that going than to admit that plain, boring, horrible old Rimmer's finally found his way back home. And maybe Lister seems to like Ace a little too much, and maybe Rimmer likes that Lister likes Ace a little too much...

INCREDIBLE Ace-era RD fic. It's got some of the best sci-fi settings that build out of the existing RD world I've read from RD fic so far - engineer Lister and pilot Rimmer? The entire Skipper chapter? And the author has done such a great job in exploring why the "Ace" character has such, frankly, horrific implications for Rimmer, by following along also with an Ace who never managed to go home. 1 chapter to-be-written, and I can't wait for it!

So this is perhaps my favourite RD fic of all time, now. It's beautiful and tragic, and it's just about Rimmer receiving one ounce of love from his family. This author is incredible at writing the voices of RD in a way that feels accurate but allows for the tragedy of it all to come through, too. The ending!!

“C'mon,” Lister feels a little bit tired of this, “don't act like you don't wank.”
“I do not,” Rimmer preens, voice unpleasantly nasal. “Sex is meant to serve a reproductive function. Both buggery and onanism are a shameful waste of genetic material. Though yours does belongs in a wastebin rather than in a living human being.”
Lister would take offense, but the unironic use of pejorative terms outdated by no less than three centuries makes him laugh instead.
“It just feels nice, man. Dontcha wanna feel nice once in a while?”
Rimmer just frowns at him, as if the sheer concept of pleasure is both incomprehensible and insulting to him.
Arnold Judas Rimmer discovers the wonderful world of guided masturbation, no homo and all. It's great fun for everybody.

Rimmer was curled up on his bunk, clad in his usual white shirt and shorts, but Rachael lay beside him, clearly unused if the pristine state of her body, o-shaped mouth, and synthetic hair was anything to go by. Rimmer was buried in her chest, arms wrapped around her like a koala on a branch. From where Lister stood, he could see the way Rimmer's shoulders relaxed, and also the way Rachael's painted eyes stared unblinking into the darkness.
...
Suddenly, things made a lot more sense. Rimmer hadn't got Rachael out for sex, he'd gotten her out to cuddle with. It was as sweet as it was sad. Lister understood what it was like to feel lonely, but he'd never gotten to the point of feeling lonely enough to cuddle with an inflatable sex doll.
Rachael makes a reappearance in Rimmer's life. The purpose of it is far more wholesome than Lister first realizes.
