    Summary

“I need to ask you a favor,” Izuku said into the collar of Hitoshi’s uniform.
    “Sure.”
    “Meet with Todoroki.”
“Okay,” Hitoshi said easily. If Izuku thought he should, then he would. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t have questions, though. “Please tell me you are not trying to rope Todoroki, who you just met two days ago, into our pack.”
Izuku hesitated. “No, this isn’t about getting him into our pack.”
“I don’t like that it took you a second to decide that,” Hitoshi said, only half joking.
“I’m not pulling him into our pack,” Izuku clarified, lifting his head up. “Just… around our pack.”
Hitoshi narrowed his eyes. “How’d you get covered in his scent?”
“He was crying on my shirt.”
“Okay,” Hitoshi said slowly, mind whirring. “Of all the possible answers, I think that would’ve been my last guess.”

    Summary

Izuku doesn’t want to learn about Todoroki through his scars. He doesn’t want explanations for broken skin or hurried reasons why Izuku shouldn’t care. He didn’t want to watch that bitter hand go to Todoroki’s left eye before the sports festival. For that mark to be the only reason he feels he knows anything about his friend at all.

Friend. Is that the right word? Izuku will try others on his tongue, words that feel more real. But for now, there is this: the history etched on Todoroki’s body and an uncertain future.

5 times Todoroki tried to hide his scars and 1 time Midoriya made him tell

    Summary

    It starts small.

When his father’s words in his head get loud, too loud, the repetition of worthless weak stupid never be anything disappointment too much for him, he digs his fingers into his newest burns, wrapped painstakingly in bandages. He wraps his small, ten year old fingers around his forearms and pushes his fingers into the bandages right above the burn, pressing in until the pain shuts his father’s voice up.

Shouto's coping mechanism is harmless, until it's not.

“I don’t know exactly why you do what you do,” she whispered. “But I know a lot of us in class would like to talk to you more. We want to know you, Todoroki, not what the press writes about you.”

    Summary

Aizawa looked him in the eye, placed a gentle hand around his bicep (not like Endeavor, his father had only ever touched him with the intention to burn) and asked, “Are you okay?”

People don’t usually ask him things. They like to tell him things, like where to sit or what to wear or how to talk or how to be a hero or how to be himself.

‘Am I okay?’ He thought. He realized he doesn’t ask himself things, either.

Shouto didn’t have an answer to Aizawa’s question, so instead he said:

“A very long time ago, my mother did something....highly upsetting.” The boy was tracing the outline of his scar, his calloused finger stopping and jumping around the bumps and ridges of the burnt skin. “Something today reminded me of that.”

“Do you want to talk about it?” His teacher asked.

    “No.”

“Okay. I’m here when you do. I’m always here, kid.” Shouto only responded with a sob. He felt as if he’d earned that right after all the emotional labor he had been put through tonight.
