Summary
Skyscrapers in the city didn’t reach so much as hunch, Atlases under the sky’s stifling weight. High-rise lights in the distant far-up were smothered by the smog, which broke itself against the brickwork—just another murder-suicide.
One more cold night in a long spell of dark, listless, collar-turned-up evenings. New York. Nineteen fifty-three.
///
Two doctors-turned-detectives meet by chance. They fall out, fall in, and fall together in the fall of 1953.

Summary
Who of us had not loved something or somebody? How much did these feelings, these loves, these worships, have to do with pure reason? Little or nothing, we saw at last. Were not these things the tissue out of which our lives were constructed? Did not these feelings, after all, determine the course of our existence? It was impossible to say we had no capacity for faith, or love, or worship. In one form or another we had been living by faith and little else.
from The Big Book by William G. Wilson and Robert H. Smith, Chapter 4: We Agnostics
—
Armand and Daniel on living by more than faith.

Summary
Survival is an artform.
Armand has been an unwilling student, an eager acolyte, a master of the craft. The things he feels can be broken down into component parts. Can be simplified into anatomic essentials, the series of processes required to make him something that functionally resembles the likeness of man. Sensation without thought. Water-damp brushstrokes dragging across a canvas with no paint. No color. No light.
Leaving Dubai was an act of necessity, arriving anywhere else an act of apathy.
In which Daniel attempts to make sense of the past and Armand attempts to do whatever the opposite of that is.

Summary
Daniel sees life like a river. Thinks he is caught up in a current that only goes one way, that will eventually sweep him out to sea. It’s easier for him to think so. It keeps him alive to think so.
He doesn’t know that he could stand up and reach the bottom. He doesn’t know he has a choice.
Drugs don’t work, sex doesn’t work, New York hasn’t worked. Somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains, an improbable number of suicides have taken place. Somewhere in a bar in New York, Daniel hears about them. He wants to fill a void. The difference between what is real and what isn’t matters as little to him as the things he’ll find to throw into the darkness. Which, as it turns out, is quite a lot.

Summary
"I know what a breakup looks like," Daniel says. "The better question is, why are you coming to me about it? I'm the one who broke up your little sham."
"This is what humans do, don't they?" Armand asks, letting his voice drop. "Crashing on their friends' couches when there's a blip in their romances?"
"Except we're not friends. We're actually very much not friends." Daniel shrugs, as if it's all the same to him. "And I can't imagine the great vampire Armand deigning himself to sleep on my fucked-up sofa. That thing's been here since the nineties."
"Well," Armand only says. "I saw you have a guest bedroom."

Summary
“You doing all right?” Daniel asks him.
Armand blinks. “No,” he says.
“Most honest you've been with me since I got here,” Daniel says. And then, because it seems like the thing to do, “I can clear out, if you need the place to yourself.”
“Whatever you prefer.” Armand's lips look chapped. Dehydration? He ate the kid with the sunglasses, but the smear he left took a lot of bleach to scrub away. Maybe Daniel should - “You won't be harmed,” Armand says, “regardless of your decision.”
“You got served divorce papers so hard it left a crater,” Daniel says, “and you're still poking around in people's heads.”

Summary
“What’s somebody as pretty as you doing at a conference as dull as this, anyway?” Hawkeye’s gaze lingered obviously on BJ’s mouth. He was turning up the charm by degrees, trying to test exactly how firmly BJ was committed to playing hard-to-get.
“Networking,” BJ replied shortly.
“Networking?” Hawkeye’s smile lines deepened. He leered. “I like the sound of that. Think you and I could make a productive connection?”///
BJ and Hawkeye take a trip east to a conference and get carried away flirting on the dance floor, triggering a major misunderstanding with their colleagues—namely, that they absolutely hate each other.

Suddenly he felt panicked and crazy. Dreams weren’t like this. Dreams didn’t rake the hot coals of the past so aggressively. Nostalgia, fantasy, booze tinted glasses were one thing, but this was another.
“It feels so real, Hawk,” BJ mumbled.
“BJ?” Hawkeye said. BJ could see him lift his head. His hair stood up, making a funny shadow on the wall. “Did you say something? Are you dreaming?”
“I can’t tell. This feels just like the day we met,” BJ said.
“The day we—oh,” Hawkeye’s voice got thin and vulnerable. “Oh, BJ, it’s all going to be okay. Trust me. You know me, don’t you? You know I wouldn’t lie?”
(BJ and Hawkeye get stuck in a time loop.)

He filled hundreds of pocket-size notebooks with every and anything that came to mind, scraps of memory, turns of phrase, lists of names, and at night he’d sit in front of the typewriter and tap away until he was too tired to continue.
It became his hallmark—O’Reilly, competent, quiet, always writing something. Fine. There were worse things to be known for.

"Hawkeye knows what he’ll do. He’ll make this Valentine’s Day so perfect BJ won’t even be able to think about leaving him without getting acid reflux. But he’s been so distracted that he’s only halfway through mixing the pancake batter when BJ wakes up.
“Mornin’, Hawk,” comes a sleepy voice from the hallway. Great. Everything’s ruined already.
“Oh, no, no, no, no, no,” Hawkeye says quickly. “You’re not supposed to come in yet. Come on, go back to sleep, you’re dreaming.”"Bookmarked by hyperbolee

hawkeye is impossible, or so he’s been told.
Part character study, part experimental non-linear narrative, part a place for me to project and put all my unnecessarily specific headcanons in one place, today we’re taking a trip through hawkeye’s chaotic train of thought after being asked a simple question: “tell me about the bus.”
