    Summary

In the aftermath, a thousand and one deaths flash before his eyes, and Ares feels them all. Every sword. Every spear. Every knife.

Over and over again, he breathes his last breath, sometimes at the hands of another soldier and sometimes at the hands of himself. He stares at his own face, caked in blood and viscera, and hates himself for loving it.

War is his vice of choice. It is his lover. His best friend. His worst enemy. He hates to love it, but no matter how he tries, he can’t seem to escape its clutches.

He’s not quite sure if he really wants to.

    - - -

It’s ironic, isn’t it? Ares hates all of Poseidon’s children with a vengeful fury, and yet, in this new world of Christianity and Capitalism, Perseus Fucking Jackson is the closest thing he has to a priest.

    Bookmarker's Notes

READ IT. The author has such an outstandingly good take on the Percy ascension trope and the portrayal of the gods themselves. They remind us that the gods are complex, and damn am I understating this. They are classical and modern and everything we make of them and everything we do not. This was such a good read, both refreshing and easy to be hooked by. This is such a good fic that I genuinely don't have the words to give it justice.

"I'll keep you updated. In the meantime, go back to sleep. When you need to worry, I'll tell you."

"Heh." Ryland ran his hand down his face. "It's terrible you know that it actually makes me feel better. What would I do without you?"

"Explode at a colleague at a conference and get expelled from academia and become a middle school teacher." Eva said, promptly.

"Wow, you've thought about that way too hard." Ryland laughed. "Middle schoolers might not vape in class, though. Maybe I should switch."

    "Let's not joke."
