    Ilya’s still learning what Shane likes and needs, observing him quietly because Shane’s not so forthcoming with what he wants unless he’s certain it’s what he’s supposed to want. But it’s not until Shane reaches back and grabs Ilya’s hip to pull him closer, pressing their bodies together and taking some of Ilya’s weight, that he realises Shane’s been studying Ilya the same way.

    “I’m trying to take care of you.”
    “Why?” Ilya says, instead of something safer.
    Shane twists over his shoulder to frown at him. “Because I want to? Because you’re tired and sad and not feeling well?”
    “Oh.” Ilya pulls his bottom lip through his teeth. “But I…”
    “I think maybe we both fucked up tonight?” Shane says tentatively.
    “No, is not your fault.” Ilya rubs a hand over Shane’s shoulder and then kisses it, wet and soft. “You’re good.”
    Shane hums like he’s not convinced. He turns and drapes his arms over Ilya’s shoulders, still pressed close. “After this, will you…”
    “Yes,” Ilya says, his mind sharpening attentively, “Tell me what you need.”

    Or: They communicate just a little bit better and let themselves be just a little more vulnerable, both with each other and their people.

    “Shane,” Ilya said slowly, putting his phone in his pocket as he walked into their home gym to find Shane running on the treadmill. “Do you mean to tell me that the years of you doing ‘just a little promo’ has actually been you tormenting David Mitchell with your apparently not incredibly boring life? And you never thought to mention it once?”

    “Huh?” Shane called, slowing the treadmill to a walk to glance over his shoulder at where Ilya was stood. “What do you mean?”

    “I mean there are lots of tweets here about you on these shows and you seem to be giving all of them aneurysms?” Ilya said, pulling his phone back out and opening up twitter to show Shane.

    Contrary to popular belief, J.J. and Shane shared rooms on roadies just as much as Hayden and Shane did. Not that it mattered to fangirls online, who'd rather focus on Hayden's awkward side hugs with Shane as "proof" of their illicit gay relationship, and not the fact that the same instagram dump features Shane sitting in J.J.'s lap for half the photos.

    J.J. is not salty about this. He loves the gays. He wants gay fans. He has gay fans. He simply wants to understand, academically, why Hayden "three kids and a wife" Pike reads as the gay one when J.J. is right there looking the way he looks.

    Or: J.J. confirms something about Shane. Then he learns something else. He handles it. (Mostly.)

    “I am serious, though, you are safe, yes? Drunk at hotel, sitting on balcony, crying over Montreal’s terrible loss?”

    It makes sense that Ilya’s mind would go there first. Shane said he was outside. Based on past behavior, the hotel balcony is probably the only place Ilya would expect him to be. He feels a little giddy that he gets to shock him for once.

    “I’m at a club, actually.” He has to bite back a self-satisfied smile as he speaks, “With the team. Safe.”

    It's quiet for a few moments before Ilya deadpans,

    “Very funny joke.”

    (or: three days after the breakup with rose, shane gets drunk in boston. it spirals out from there.)
