Summary
‘Essek,’ Caleb says, very quietly. ‘Are you telling me that you went into this fight convinced you would never get up if you went down?’
Essek places a hand over the centre of his chest, the place where Lucien’s blade hit. The place where Jester’s diamond shattered. ‘Yes.’
(In the battle with the Tombtakers, Essek falls. His friends bring him back. And each of them has a request to make of him.)

Summary
Essek returns, when he can, to the sanctuary of Caleb's home. The peace of it is a balm against the tedious peril of the road, which has more misery to share than Essek had ever thought. It's nice to have a place where he can lose himself: in a book, in arcane study, in the confusing allure of Caleb's smile.
It's nice. And the cats miss him, Caleb says.

Summary
“Beauregard – you said she is outside?” Essek half-turns in the direction of the front door. “Should we invite her in?”
It feels like there is something stuck in his throat. “In a moment. She is, ah – giving us some space.”
Essek turns back to stare at him. Repeats quietly, dangerously, “Space.”
Caleb forces himself to swallow. “Yes.”
Essek’s attention is a palpable thing now, sharp like a knife’s edge against his cheek. “Explain.”
One moment makes all the difference during the battle at Blumenthal. In the aftermath, the Nein grapple with what comes next.

Summary
Beau begins by sighing exasperatedly, which is typically not ideal for selling a pitch, but what the fuck, right? “I wanted to ask you,” she says, carefully now, “If you would maybe be interested in working with the Cobalt Soul. In a more, uh, official capacity. Like with a salary and everything, or whatever.”
There is a silence which is somehow worse than the silence that they were sitting in before. Essek makes a small sound that must be unconscious, sort of like a death rattle. Beau didn’t know such an undignified noise was in his repertoire.

Summary
“So,” she says, breaking the silence. “Not much of an adventuring type, are you?”
He tenses a little, clearly surprised to be addressed, but he recovers quickly. “Not particularly,” he agrees. “I have always been more of a man of research.”
Beau mulls this over, before deciding fuck it. “What are you doing here, then?”

Summary
The first letter Essek receives from Caleb Widogast is secreted into his pocket at some point during a tense interview with the Bright Queen. For the life of him, Essek cannot figure out how it was done. He doesn’t recall so much as brushing against the other man as he escorted the Mighty Nein out of the Lucid Bastion.
Yet when he returns to his office, there it is, tucked into a nearly invisible pocket in his mantle — a piece of subpar parchment folded to vaguely resemble a cat’s face with tiny pointed ears.

Summary
But no, she was here at Caleb’s shitty table, across from Essek, who’s boring holes into the rough-hewn wood with downcast eyes. The thing about Essek, she muses, was that he felt that he was so indebted to the Nein that he was willing to do almost anything to avoid being an inconvenience. Which might, she thinks, be sort of toxic.

Summary
Caleb had not so much as met his eyes since arriving. And maybe the rest of the evening with the Mighty Nein had made him too optimistic, or maybe it was the vague ideas that had been swirling in his head since he’d first received the news that his friends were in Eiselcross, but Essek decided the moment was right to take a calculated risk.
“It has been a while since we’ve had a lesson in dunamancy.”

Summary
When Bren Aldric Eremendrud was a boy, whenever he felt small or lonely, he’d look up at the stars, wondering if there was life up there. Turns out, he was looking in the wrong direction. When alien life entered our world it was from the deep beneath the Lucidian Ocean, a fissure between two tectonic plates. A portal between the dimensions, a breach.
To fight the Kaiju wreaking havoc on the world, mankind created monsters of their own. The Jaeger Program was implemented. Jaeger. Zemnian for hunter. Monsters designed to put these otherworldly abominations back in their place.
One pilot couldn’t handle the neural load to pilot the Jaegers alone, so a two pilot system was implemented, one on the left side, one on the right. The two pilots had to link their minds to work in perfect synchronous harmony to ensure that the mechs could run properly. With technology being advanced from cooperation and a worldwide ceasefire to stop this problem, the Pan Lucidian Defense Corps was born.

He thinks maybe it should make him more frightened, that he should worry about the liabilities he has allowed these people to become. It does nothing to temper the joy of being trusted, of being someone worthy of friend. A rabbit walks into a snare. The snare closes around its throat, killing it. What is responsible for its death, the stupidity of the rabbit or the viciousness of the snare’s purpose?

But Da'leth's lackeys have Caleb so I guess no one can catch a fucking break.
