The whole cavernous train station gets muffled, nothing but the high discordant ring of tinnitus in his ears. Cougar takes a deep breath. He has to work, now, to get his ribs to expand. He has to flex his hands to try to get the feeling back.
Clay is talking, low and urgent, when Cougar can hear again. "-get out, Jensen?"
Jensen looks up, gives Clay a ghost of a grin. "I made some friends," he says. "And people say it's hard when you're an adult."

It’s like they’re in the weirdest hall of mirrors imaginable. Jensen sees his expression reflected on Cougar’s face. He reaches up and touches his cheekbone, watching the Cougar in the mirror reflect the motion. He pulls his hand through his hair, Cougar’s hair. He looks down at Cougar’s hands, then over to the Jensen standing next to him.
Huh, so that’s what Cougar sounds like when he screams.
