Draco brightened. He looked Potter over speculatively.
“I’m depending upon it.”

Summary
Hermione rarely said the word Malfoy. Harry and Ron still used it sometimes, in public or to tease him. But with Hermione, Draco suspected it had been years since the word ever passed her lips. He had asked her about it, once.
“Did you know that in French, your name means bad faith? Mal foi. Mauvaise foi.”
Draco nodded.
“You aren’t mal foi.”

Summary
Slowly, enunciating each word clearly, Rajan said, “Do you speak English?”
"No," Wolfgang said. "Nein."
Or: Wolfgang is the last of the cluster, which is bad enough, except he only speaks German and Russian. He and Rajan no longer have a common language.

Summary
Shrugging one shoulder far more casually than he possibly feels, Ilya says, “I like both. Is secret, okay?”
“Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.
He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.
Nobody knows why Shane Hollander dropped out of the 2009 draft at the last second, and a year later it stuns the whole hockey world when he's signed by the Boston Raiders. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston - but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

Summary
Sometimes life came at you with a clenched fist and Ilya had never figured out how to duck.
So here he was, twenty-eight years old, single, dealing with the fallout from injuries given to him by the game he loved, and the second youngest assistant coach in the league to one of the worst teams. Stability was hard to come by, but he was managing.
Then along came Shane Hollander to knock him on his ass, one more time.

Summary
Hollander sighs. “It doesn’t concern you,” he says, and his eyes are pointed at Ilya but his gaze is unfocused, distant. Ilya remembers that last, game-winning shot. He wants Hollander’s attention, wants it more in this moment than he’d wanted the goal.
Ilya spreads his hands. “Then why are we still here when we could already be having victory sex in another room?” He smiles, deliberate and mean. “Well, victory sex for me, not for you.”
Normally, this would do the trick. Hollander stares back at Ilya and then says,
“Hayden’s sister thinks I have symptoms of autism.”
(Set circa 2013 or 2014. Shane wrestles with the possibility he might be autistic. Ilya wrestles with how badly he wants Shane.)

Summary
Rozanov cocked his head. “You speak Russian? Or just the curse words?”
“Yes, I speak Russian,” he snapped, defensive and angry. He knew that it had been a mistake to even try to be friendly with Rozanov. “Why? Do I not look Russian to you?” He scoffed.
“No, not really,” Rozanov said. Some of his teammates laughed, although they mostly looked surprised that Shane was speaking to them at all. Rozanov didn’t laugh, though. “Are you Russian?”
“Go fuck yourself.”
+++
Despite an inauspicious start, when Russia’s Ilya Rozanov learns that Canada’s Shane Hollander is fluent in Russian at their first World Junior Championships tournament, it changes everything and sets them on a different course. Instead of being branded as rivals from the very beginning, Ilya and Shane start off as friends.
And, after all, a little friendly rivalry never hurt anyone, did it?
