Jake was broke. His rent was late and he was getting to the point of owing money to loan sharks.

Riki gives him a skeptical look, hugging the back of the couch cushion even closer to his chest. Jungwon watches them intently, hands back in the pumpkin, orange strands hanging from his cheeks. From far away they look like clumps of spider eggs growing out of his skin, and with Jungwon’s dark, unblinking boba eyes, Jake feels unnerved looking at him. He shifts his gaze back to Riki.
“You promise?” Riki asks at last. “Promise that nothing bad will get us.”
“Of course I promise.” Jake holds out his pinky, the most sacred of all promises. Jungwon even gasps at the gesture. “Nothing bad is going to get you.”
Or: Jake wants to get through this night of Halloween babysitting in peace, but his best friend, his crush, and the strange guy that seems to be following him around are making it very difficult.
