    Bookmarker's Notes

The previous instalment in this series is lovely, but this fic is everything! I’m weak for the estranged sibling relationships between Jean and Barbara, and Kaeya and Diluc. Author does a wonderful job of exploring how sibling relationships change and strain over the years.

She’s not sure how much sense she makes, telling this story.

It jumps back and forth, between times and places and people and memories. But Wanderer listens nonetheless, his gaze never drifting away from her, even when their coffee arrives. Or at least, not until she hands him a photo across the table.

He lifts it for just a second to eye it, then tosses it back onto the table. “You have the same mopey look in your eyes.”

the silliest!! just an alien and a puppet talking about their lost memories

    Summary

Teyvat emerges triumphant in the war against Celestia. The Sustainer takes revenge with her dying gasp, and it's only through Kaeya's sacrifice that the people of Mondstadt outlive her fury.

However, his heroism leaves him a petrified husk in the center of Mondstadt's main square. Mondstadt is eager to enshrine him in legend – how could they not, with the statue right there? Diluc abhors the sentiment.

After all, commemorating Kaeya's heroism is tantamount to accepting his death.

When he looks, Amber’s eyes are wide with realization, fixed on his bloodied hand. Well, shucks. Looks like he’s given himself away.

“You can’t do this,” she whispers into the storm.

The worldbuilding! The angst! The knowing that your brother is Right There and still being unable to reach him! Doing anything you can to save him because he’s still your baby brother!

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Who's going to take me purely on what I can offer the Knights of Favonius?" Kaeya's smile is taking on that sharp edge again.

She meant what she said. Kaeya isn't Diluc, but he's just as competent, in his own way. He's stood in for Diluc before, when Diluc was ill or injured or off on a one-man mission, and he's performed well. The thought of his talent, his dedication, his training all being tossed away because he pricked Diluc's temper at a painful moment is devastating. The Ordo can't lose them both. She can't lose them both.

"I will," Jean says, before she's entirely aware that she's intending to say it.

A wonderful Jean and Kaeya marriage of convenience/political thriller/murder mystery rolled into one. Author takes what we know of the period following Crepus’s death and brings it to life with such vivid detail and thorough worldbuilding that it absolutely sucks you in.

Characters are at their fullest and most well-realized in this fic, arguably better than in canon. Frederica in this fic has my entire heart - she toes the line between stern and well-meaning, between competent official and slightly awkward mother. Jean and Kaeya’s relationship is such a delight to read: the most fulfilling kind of platonic, shot through with a deep trust and understanding of what the other person needs and what they have to offer.

    Summary

“Do you still love the crystalflies?” Venti asks, runs a finger around edge of his wine.

    Diluc goes very still. “What?”

“They haunt your vines,” Venti says, smiles into his glass, soft and a little melancholic. “I thought you liked them?”

    Bookmarker's Notes

“Is it a true story?” Diluc says, wary and sounding childish even to his own ears.

Venti pauses, looks very nearly stricken. “I wouldn’t tell you falsehoods, Master Diluc,” he says, quietly. “I promise.”

“Alright,” Diluc says. Fights the urge to tug at his gloves, hunch his shoulders like a person much younger, with much cleaner hands. “Tell me about the wine.”

I think this fic rewired my brain. I keep finding myself coming back to it for its vivid atmosphere, the delicate prose, and the wry and pensive way Venti is characterized.
