I’ll remember that summer for as long as I live.
You, with your all-American blond hair and green eyes and your quick, smart mouth. You in your I LOVE N.Y shirt, tossing back laugh after laugh. I laughed, too, that day—so much. You, sipping on a bucket of Coke, chasing down the fizzy high with ice cream in every flavor of sweetness. We shared straws, salty fries, the shade under a tree. You, with the easy grin and the slender shoulders. Your back disappearing under the river’s surface, fish swimming in between our legs.
I didn’t have my camera, back then, to capture your everything. I wish I did.

“Last night, I went to sleep in the same bedroom as you in the house we've had since last year,” Phainon says. “This morning, I woke up in an unfamiliar room that looks like it was built a thousand years ago. You weren’t in bed with me, there wasn’t a wedding band on my finger, and”—his eyes flicker to Mydei’s chest, a fiery blush blooming on his face—“you’re half-naked.”
“We sleep together?” Mydei asks, surprised.
Phainon deadpans.
“We’re married.”
(Phainon finds himself in a modern Amphoreus where he and Mydei have been married for years. Mydei finds himself with a Phainon that claims the two of them are married.)

“No,” Mydei says, with as much weight as it deserves.
He swears he hears Phainon swallow.

On a night like any other, in one of Amphoreus's many cycles, Mydei and Phainon discuss everyone's marriage but their own.

Phainon did the only thing possible in such a situation: He panicked.
“Uh,” he said, because clearly his eloquence had abandoned him during one of the cycles, “yes?”
// OR, circumstance leads to the heirs thinking Phainon only lived through thirty-three cycles. Rather than correcting them on this, Phainon doubles down and decides this is the new narrative he'll go along with so as to avoid worrying them too much.
