Men and women are dancing, together or apart. Bodies are moving like waves, pulling his gaze forward, just like the current would draw him to the middle of the ocean. And it doesn't take long for Ilya to drown. Not when his eyes land on Rose Landry, smiling brightly at the man beside her.
She has her arms around his shoulders, and she's leaning up to whisper something in his ear. They move to the music, but not quite.
The music may have stopped.
Or maybe Ilya's heart has stopped beating.
Because all he can see is the back of the man, and all he can hear are the waves calling to him. In the middle of the crowded, living blur of strobe lights and glued bodies, Ilya's eyes have settled on Shane Hollander.

“So, uh, I’m off,” Shane says from the other room. Ilya can hear his steps heading towards the door. Ilya remains in the bed, undressed and unmoved, staring blankly at the wall.
“Goodbye, Hollander,” is all he can say. Ilya hears the door click shut.
It didn’t even slam. It closed softly. Almost makes it worse. A few words and a soft click, and Hollander is gone.
“Fuuuck,” Ilya groans, teeth almost biting into the filter of his cigarette. We didn’t even kiss, Ilya thinks as he lets his head fall back against the headboard.
Or: Ilya is the one regretting they didn't even kiss.

Never took part in something like this before and it was a very sudden decision. So, although my hope is to write something for every daily prompt, I will make no promises.
I have no idea of what length each chapter will have—it might range from 300 to 1500 words. If I do skip a day, I will try to include it at the end of the month and then rearrange the chapters to be in order. We'll see. 🤷♀️
