Summary
Here in Erebor, among the Dwarves who had reclaimed their home with blood and sweat, Bilbo could almost forget that he was a Hobbit of the Shire. He could almost forget that Hobbits were not as other beings of Middle-earth, and that a mountain devoid of rich plant life was not the place for one such as he.

At first, Bilbo is very glad to hear of the new alliance between Erebor and the Shire. He is even more excited when he learns that some of his family members are coming to the Lonely Mountain to discuss the details.
That is, until the dwarves (and Thorin, who is decidedly not and never shall be his) start getting along a little too well with one of his more adventurous cousins, and Bilbo starts doubting about his place.

The creases that form in his forehead at the raising of eyebrows do not look like they belong to anyone as adolescent as a mere fifty years of age. “Yes,” he pants, wiping his mouth on his sleeve and grinning. “But I’ll be fifty-one in a few months’ time, if it’s of interest to you.”
Fifty. The number is so small it tightens something in the region of Thorin's chest.

By a curse or a blessing from the Valar, Bilbo finds himself repeating the same horrific day of war outside of Erebor again and again. His repeats are always triggered when someone from the company falls. He suffers days and days on his own before the others begin to repeat the day with him.
One would think that with the whole company, an elf king, and a bowman all knowing what was to come, Bilbo would have an easier time getting them all through the day alive.
One would think that, wouldn't they.

Okay, yes he is the smallest, yes he does wear the least clothing, yes they did just get caught in a downpour that would make a drooling troll proud, yes Bilbo is completely soaked to the bone, yes they did find shelter in a drafty cavern, and yes he is shivering because of the cold.
But that does not mean he needs all thirteen of the dwarves shoving him on the ground and practically cocooning him with their own bodies!

“You have a tiny Hobbit,” Fíli said, sounding astonished. “Why do you have a tiny Hobbit?” Kíli asked, his voice suspicious. “Did you get married?” asked Fíli, now sounding worried. “This is not good,” Kíli muttered, with twice the worry as Fíli. “Uncle, why are they staring at you?” Frodo asked, his voice confused.
Bilbo fled Erebor before his friends could be buried, before he had to see Thorin encased in stone. He returns to the Shire and settles into a life of unsociability and some amount of loneliness, but finds comfort in the figures of the children of Hobbiton.
After twenty years, however, his luck is gone, and Bilbo has to flee the Shire with Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin, and with four very young Hobbits, there is only one place he can turn to.Series

“You know, I’m still not convinced,” Charles says as Erik pushes him back onto the bed, wriggling up the mattress until his head is firmly propped on the small mountain of pillows he insists he needs, body lithe and comfortably naked on top of the coverlet. He looks up at Erik through his lashes like a peepshow of blue, a small coy curl to the corner of his mouth. “I mean, you’re good, darling, but I’m not convinced you’re that good. No offence.”
“None taken,” Erik says, and it’s gratifying the way Charles’ gaze drops to where he’s slowly unbuttoning his shirt, pupils dilating as he watches the widening triangle of skin exposing more and more of Erik’s chest. There’s an underlying feeling of growing arousal in the room, but he can feel it when Charles’ attention focuses, suddenly, like a prism coming into alignment. “Since I’m going to convince you otherwise.”
