    It had been easier, in some ways, to work with Batman before knowing his secret identity. Clark felt honored to be entrusted with the knowledge, cherished the gaps in Batman’s armor that he was so cautiously welcomed into, but it came with its own complications. 

    Clark’s attraction to Batman was long-handled. Acknowledged and suffered through with the appropriate levels of embarrassment and distant, private yearning. But Bruce Wayne, with his sharp blue eyes and clever tongue, was new. And Bruce Wayne, to Clark’s eternal suffering, had a penchant for taking his clothes off.

    "Superman believes in the law," Clark said, trying to project his most professional Alpha authority while actively ignoring the dizzying, expensive scent of the billionaire across from him. "Batman operates on terror. Honestly, he acts like an arrogant Alpha who thinks he owns the city."

    Bruce stared at him for a fraction of a second. And then, to Clark's absolute bewilderment, he threw his head back and laughed. It was a bright, breathless, devastating sound.

    "An arrogant Alpha," Bruce repeated, wiping a genuine tear of mirth from his eye as he leaned in close. "Well, Clark... personally? I think he's very charming."

    Or:

    Clark Kent has a massive, inconvenient crush on Gotham's sweet, untouchable Omega billionaire. He also has a massive, inconvenient grudge against Gotham's ruthless, territorial Alpha vigilante.

    There were three possibilities:

    One: Jon was telling the truth—and so were Damian’s memories—and Damian’s childhood best friend really had been abducted at age eleven by a mysterious woman who had made everyone forget he ever existed, even his own father.

    Two: Damian’s memories were accurate, but the thing Damian had met in the park was not Jon, and was using his memories to manipulate Damian for some nefarious purpose, presumably connected to whatever had made Jon disappear in the first place.

    Three: Jon Kent had never existed, and the thing in the park had implanted those memories in Damian’s mind—again, for nefarious purposes.

    It was tempting to believe in the first option. Damian’s memories of Jon were so clear: clinging to Goliath’s back and laughing as they soared through the night sky. Crouching by his open window, daring Jon to be bad for once and sneak out. Swearing to Superman that he would protect him.

    If Jon was real, Damian had failed profoundly to keep that promise.

    “Well, that was fun,” Tim said, his hands shoved into his pockets. “It was a nice plan, but you know us. We can just drive back to San Francisco and I’ll get a flight.”

    Kon looked at his posture, the quintessentially Tim tilt of his head. “No, dude, are you kidding me? You’re gonna deny me this rite of passage? Get back in the car. It’s gonna be epic.”

    Tim had smiled, a big bright thing that lasted all the way until they got back on the highway and Kon tried to fight him for the aux cord because like hell was he going to listen to the same Marina and the Diamonds EP for 57 hours.
