Summary

His father sends him to Missouri to visit a cousin he says is the custodian of a family tradition which can help Jamil dodge the draft. But Jamil’s cousin gives him something which has far more impact on his life than just a way to evade the draft.

Max clocked Jamil’s discomfort. “Oh, it’s a fool-proof technique. Guaranteed to work.”
“Didn’t you serve in Korea?” Asked Jamil.
“Yeah… Sometimes it fails,” Max admitted. “But I was this close to getting my section 8 discharge.”
