Will hasn't spoken specifically to Mike in over a year. After the Byers moved to California that one year, and Will hardly talked to Mike anymore, they promised each other that they’d always stay in contact, even after high school graduation. That’s what a party is supposed to do, right?
Will followed in Jonathan’s footsteps and enrolled at NYU, just a short drive away from Joyce and Hopper in Montauk, who are soon to be married. After a year of going to college, his life’s been pretty great. He’s been taking fun (overbearing) art classes, has a fun (tiring) job, and an amazing (confusing) boyfriend. What more could he ask for?
It isn’t until his second year at college when things take a turn. Mike is back, enrolling at NYU for who knows what. It’s been so long since Will has even seen Mike that he doesn’t even know what to say to him, but one thing is for certain, Mike is different. He’s been acting really weird recently, specifically around Will, and Will is determined to find out why.
A year in college in which Will figures out Mike’s feelings towards him were a little more intense than he once remembered, all while trying to “balance” his “amazing” relationship.

Mike, for his part, hasn’t looked Will in the eye since the almost-thing had almost-happened.

“Mike?” He doesn’t even mean to ask. “What are you doing?”
There’s a long exhale behind him and then he hears a breath hitch.
“It’s my problem and you told me to deal with it,” Mike breathes. “So, I’m dealing with it.” Will wishes so badly he had something to physically throw at him. But he doesn’t, so he remains frozen there with his eyes closed and his nails digging into the palms of his hands. “That’s what you said, isn’t it?”
Mike seriously needs therapy, he thinks.
“I’m going to kick your ass if your hand’s on your dick right now,” Will protests, although nothing about his tone is even the slightest bit threatening.
“You’ll have to turn around to find out.”

Summary
Now with the party officially being in college, the summer prior left space for them to discover themselves. Mike Wheel came to the conclusion by breaks end that he was homophobic. At least he thinks so. Whenever he saw two too close guys around each other, always sneaking looks, touching, sharing food, Mike couldn’t stand it. Not because it affected his daily life or anything, but because it affected Will’s.
He almost always noticed things like that whenever he was with Will and his friend would always have this kind of distraught look on his face. Mike couldn’t believe people like that didn’t have common decency for others. For Will. It’s normal to be weary of others most especially if they may be bothersome to your best friend.
But what isn’t normal is when your said best friend comes out as gay and starts to crush on some stupid guy and you’re suddenly starting to worry about… competition? For his friendship, of course!
