Mottled red claims every visible inch of Link's skin. His mouth is open and horrified, breath wheezing in desperate gasps she last heard the day he died. His eyes—his eyes are the hardest part, the sclerae pitch black, the irises chewed up by acidic yellow.
Neither of them move. Neither of them look away. Tears roll down her cheeks, just as gloom drips from his. And for the first time since Zelda woke at Lookout Landing, the world crystallizes around her.
She made it home, and home is barely recognizable.

Summary
Even though Riju shares blood with Lady Urbosa, she can never think of her as anyone but a character of legend. All those who knew her are dead now, and all that remains are her stories. Her mastery over lightning, the Divine Beast she piloted—they’ve all disappeared.
When Riju lays in her mother’s bed at night in the highest room in Gerudo Town, she wonders if Lady Urbosa ever felt too small for it all. She wonders if she ever felt grief, and if she handled it with grace and dignity. Surely, Lady Urbosa wouldn’t feel out of place in the chief’s quarters. The mattress would fit her perfectly.
Before Riju is anyone, she is a child content in her ancestors' shadows. Or, how the youngest Gerudo chief in recent history grows into her own skin.
