Awhile back, I opened prompts for Chengxian, Zhancheng, and Zhanchengxian ficlets as antis had been spamming the Twitter ship hashtags with hate.

This series contains ficlets that were posted in response to prompts.

    Summary

Dehlia is a quiet church deacon. Venti is a bard who keeps showing up to confession just to mess around, or so it seems at first.

But over time, Venti's confessions start to feel more real. More personal. And Dehlia starts to care more than he should.

By the time the truth comes out, Dehlia isn’t sure where the line is between faith, love, and the wind that keeps pulling them together.

    Summary

The loud — yet toned-down — conversations tell him that the lanterns have followed him from Liyue, speckles of light in the sky that move according to the breeze. Swaying their glasses full of wine, every Mondstadter he sees is busy murmuring their wishes as if they are in the presence of majestic shooting stars.

Instead, they are just witnessing the resilience of humankind.

Zhongli turns a corner, a quiet one that seems to have been forgotten by the lively crowd. In this street, there are only houses, the occasional country mouse and them. The wind knows everything, after all, and the God of Freedom is shackled by this one thing he keeps doing: he finds Zhongli, always.

    Zhongli and Venti through millennia.

    Summary

“Zhongli,” Venti manages to murmur. His throat still hoarse from the screams and probably the cold that he will get after this.

Golden arms fix him on a stool and Zhongli refuses to look at him.

Warm water pours on Venti’s head, making his hair cover his eyes again. Venti is sure that blood is dripping from his hair, too. Everything is reeking of coagulated blood, a remark of the familiarity of it dies in Venti’s tongue. Zhongli hasn’t said a single word since Venti woke up, it’s better not to bother him. The stars know what would happen if Venti said the wrong thing. If it were Venti who saw Zhongli stumble upon him with a hole in his chest, his reaction wouldn’t be a pretty one.

Also called: Zhongli's bad (or good?) timing when it comes to visiting Venti, and Venti's unlucky day.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This might be one of the most sleep-deprived bookmarks I've ever made, but god, Venti is so JAWDROPPINGLY messy and COMPLETELY unapologetic about it in this fic that I can't stop thinking about it.

(Spoilers to anyone who is not me reading this, please look away, but this a note to myself for when I'm inevitably looking for this fic in my bookmarks and can't find it because the summary doesn't do it nearly enough justice—)

There's is a very very special kind of compellingness in a Venti who manages to pull off stringing Zhongli along for millennia letting Zhongli talk about the yaksha he is in love with but can't have, SEDUCING THAT YAKSHA AWAY FROM ZHONGLI ALMOST IMMEDIATELY UPON FIRST MEETING AND TAKING HIS VIRGINITY, and then immediately breaking his heart by not hesitating to take his life in defense of your corrupted dragon friend, forcing Zhongli to intervene to save his life, and then somehow STILL MANAGING TO WIN THE TWO OF THEM BACK for yourself by SEDUCING ZHONGLI when he turns up to exact vengeance for seduction and attempted murder of the person he loves, only that you manage to successfully convince him to SUMMON XIAO while the two of you are being SOME LEVEL OF SEXUALLY INTIMATE, and then successfully seducing Xiao to join you by putting your sexual intimacy on display!

And the best part is that the execution is not "porno" like a summary of events like that suggests with no context, because the prose is rich and the vignettes are poignant, Venti doesn't come across like a porn plot femme fatale or even that very much like a horrible asshole. He's devoted, and loving, and kind, but also unexpectedly ruthless. At the end, you're a little pole-axed, and then after several hours you realize you're still thinking about this amazing, CRAZY-ASS bastard who pulled off the wildest heist in 6,000 years, plausibly the history of Tevyat itself, by managing to win the two people he wanted to have even after betrayal, seduction and attempted murder, BY EVEN MORE UNAPOLOGETIC SEDUCTION.

And the thing is that this Venti isn't necessarily the highlight of this fic even, he's just the one who leaves you POLE AXED at the end at how he even pulled this off. But the big highlight of everything is how it pulls together these three people, and it makes you feel that the 3 lines in this triangle are all DIFFERENT from each other (the equality and confidance between Zhongven, contrasted with the fealty and unattainability between Zhongxiao, then followed by the whirlwind twisted first love and betrayal that was Xiaoven) but the three lin s are equally compelling and also equally important in fervor and depth of feeling. And the fic does so much to make you feel the passage of time, of centuries, of MILLENNIA, and to also how that passage of time has nursed those feelings to this level of fervor, and also how that passage of time — the loneliness of immortality, combined with the trauma of war, bloodshed, and grief — has broken these three individuals to the extent that something as wild as this GRAND HEIST of betrayal and seduction could plausibly be pulled off.
