Summary
He spies the soldiers returning after lunch, watches how they get on their knees to bow formally at Katsuki and Aizawa and announce what they discovered of the dragon’s carcass in the woods.
It’s then that Izuku realizes the gravity of what Katsuki has done.
At only age sixteen, following in his mother’s footsteps, Katsuki has completed the rite of succession by dragon-slaying; Katsuki is to be king.

Two childhood friends grow up dreaming of adventure, then grow apart as their dreams clash. Izuku yearns to be a knight, but the only one who can promote him is Katsuki, who has every intention of keeping Izuku out of the royal court.
When misfortune befalls the land, Katsuki sets out to reunite his broken kingdom, unaware of the secret legacy that enlists Izuku's protection from an ancient evil. The machinations of fate weave a tangled web, and Izuku watches, picking at the threads.

But still, Izuku smiles and takes the first of many now-familiar steps to the train station because even to be caught thinking about Kacchan gives him an excuse to let the fingers of his memory trace the outline of his back, which is something. Kacchan is his childhood friend and sometimes his rival, after all, though that may not mean much in the years to come.
Izuku wilts along with his sheepish smile. “I don’t think he would like it very much if he heard me.”
Something in Todoroki’s blank expression gives Izuku the impression that, somehow, in a way he cannot understand, he casts an exaggerated look-right and look-left down the thoroughfare as if to make a point of Kacchan’s absence even though he never stops piercing Izuku through with his limpid stare.
“I don’t think he’ll hear you,” he says.

The thoughts and feelings of others, as well as one's thoughts and feelings towards oneself, play as much of a role in writing one's life story as the cosmic reality of random chance. A sudden encounter with a ragged, spiteful middle schooler drives this home for Izuku Midoriya and the people closest to him.

Meanwhile, Fuyumi again snuggles up in the collar of her down jacket as she sees them off, takes Izuku’s hand, and says — and Katsuki swears he doesn’t care at all about this. He even sits in the car and juts out his lower lip in a pout to look as disinterested and unaffected as possible — “Thank you for being Shouto’s friend.”
And Katsuki looks at her smile and Izuku’s blushing cheeks and their intertwined hands and Todoroki’s cheerfully embarrassed face, and realizes like the stupid child he knows he is:
I want what I don’t deserve.
