Summary
Shiro doesn’t let himself stop to grieve; behind him, he can hear the rumble of too many feet, marching ever closer. He gives the controls one last look over—the screen still frozen on its loading screen—before he looks back to Keith.
Keith, eyes barely open, blinking in confusion.
“Shiro…?”
For a moment, the weakness in Keith’s voice makes Shiro himself weak. Makes him want to clamber in with Keith, laws of physics be damned, and pretend that they can fly off together and save each other once more, the way they’ve done so many times.
Just not this time.
(Or, near death experiences make for great segues into discussions about your relationship with your best friend who you staunchly believe does not reciprocate your feelings.)

Chapter 5: loyalty
Keith doesn’t know who Prince Keith is meant to be, what those six letters are meant to bring to him. Diplomacy isn’t his strong suit, nor is patience, and from what he can observe of Ulaz attempting to pull everything together, one needs both of those in spades to run a country. Good intentions can only get you so far, as life has taught him, time and time again. He has no training beyond combat or which seeds are best sown when, and there are so many things that are changing that he doesn’t know where to begin.

Summary
Keith saves a merman. In the process, he saves himself.
“Let him drown!”
Keith winced. That voice was unmistakably Sendak’s. No one went against Sendak and, well, that was going to be that.
Deciding not to think about how much longer he had before they tossed him over the side of the ship, Keith peered through the hole in the hull to the wide expanse of the ocean outside, chains scraping on the damp floor as he shifted. He wondered where the mer had gone. Had he been able to find his family? Keith could only hope so—it had never felt right for the creature to be held captive. Keith had seen many atrocities in his years on the ship, but there had been something so wrong about holding the mer. The pained defiance in the creature’s eyes, the deep sorrow it held. It had been without its family.
Keith knew that feeling all too well.
So in the end, it had been an easy decision to make. An easy decision to choose freedom and life, even if it meant he condemned his own.

“I’m gonna marry him.” Henry gestures at the man leaning against the bar, grinning so brightly it puts the mirrorball to shame. Pez’s eyes follow his gaze and his brows climb to his forehead.
“Darling,” he says gently, “I’m pretty sure Alexander has a girlfriend.”
The corners of Henry’s lips twitch, but he doesn’t let that get to him. He takes a sip of his drink, letting the warmth spread in his chest. A smile spreads on his face.
“Sounds to me like they haven’t tied the knot yet.”
Or, the one in which Henry works hard to sweep Alex off his feet, not realizing Alex is already halfway in love.
