“Dude, what are you even saying right now?” He asks, with as much sincerity and firmness as the situation will allow. At this point, Lucas isn’t even sure what the situation even is. Did Mike finally figure out that the painting came from the painter himself? He almost wants to ask, but decides against it, not willing to risk outing Will anymore than he already did himself if Lucas was wrong and Mike was still just as clueless. “Will was crying? What –”
“I think I made a mistake.” Mike says it so small that Lucas almost doesn’t hear it. Not hushed in embarrassment, no, more like a silent declaration to himself and by the way his brows furrow and lips purse, it’s one that fills him with immediate shame.
Lucas lets another minute or so pass between the both of them before repeating, “You made a mistake?”

After Lucas helps him realize the true meaning behind the painting Will gave him back in Lenora, Mike sets out on an impulsive voyage to New York City in a last-ditch attempt to save his friendship with Will, and hopefully, turn it into something more.

It never fails to get a giggle out of Will. Pretty girl. It never sounds like a mockery when it comes out of Mike’s mouth. It never feels out of place—never feels like a mockery.
It erases all the bullying and abuse related to this side of him. The truest side of him. It undoes years of repression and fear. Just like that.
“It’s me,” Will sniffles, a smile on his face.

Summary
Will and Mike are college roommates and freshmen. Mike comes back from a shower and they decide to watch Dirty Dancing together. During the movie, Will admits he's never kissed anyone and feels insecure about it. Mike offers to let Will "practice" kissing with him - supposedly just as friends helping each other out, with no romantic feelings involved.
