Summary
Neal laughed, and he smiled, and he joked, but there was something else in his eyes. It took her long minutes to place it, but when she did, all she could think of was another poem:
like a fox spirit
come smiles and easy laughter—
a mask for sorrowShe didn’t ask. They weren’t close enough for her to ask, and she didn’t think he wanted the questions anyway.

Summary
What happens in the locker room stays in the locker room, they say.
The premier club system is one of those strange hang-overs from so far back in the game’s history that it has become a quaint English social norm that everyone accepts and nobody talks about.
It's rude, really, to speculate what a lad's mentor might be doing to him in the locker rooms. And anything that lad might be asked to do in return? Well that's private. Anyway, it’s just respectful to pay your dues to the older, more experienced members of the team.

Summary
What if Roy quit before he could be fired? What if his pain was taken seriously? What if he was deviously manipulated into coaching? What if he had spent his whole career denying himself his sexuality? What if Jamie kept being a fucking problem? What if everything happened just a little bit differently?

Summary
"If it's about Keeley, just save it, mate," he says, his mouth full of food. "Let's never bring this shit up again."
"No," Roy huffs. He's not touched his own food yet. "It's— it's not about her at all. It's about me, and I don't know why I'm telling you this, especially now, but you have to promise you won't take the fucking piss, because I really just need to fucking say this, okay?"
Jamie swallows his bite, and sets down the half-finished kebab. He straightens up a bit.
"Yeah, okay. Go on."
Roy takes a breath.
"Right. Fuck. Fine." He clenches one fist in his lap, trying to ground himself with the sensation of his nails digging into his palm, but they're too short to really do much. He's bitten them into stubs this week. "I'm losing my vision. Like, badly. I'm going fucking blind."

roy can't see so well at night anymore. things get worse from there.
but also, maybe, a little better.
(or, the one where i took a throwaway line from season 1, asked "is anyone gonna make angst out of this?", and didn't wait for an answer.)
