It's only by the grace of Jevil's incredible suggestibility that this can work at all. They've discussed this beforehand, even tested it briefly, before they finally got a game plan together; if he hits Jevil with the eyes every so often, and then redirects his attention to the pendulum to make up for Spamton's recovery period, they can hopefully manage to keep a trance going throughout the scenario.
