Now, Grian had extensively warned the players entering the games about the risk. He’d had nearly ten meetings covering — in detail — every way this could go wrong (or right.)
He’d had them sign wavers. Saying he wasn’t liable for any damages, relationship changes, or hybrid evolutions they may or may not come under. Ren and Martyn had been in hysterics reading the list. Cackling over it while Grian had remained red faced but firm in his standings.
Who would have thought that almost every single warning ended up applying to Grian!

Scar can’t answer, too busy trying to control his breathing. It was Grian who had helped him build their home in the desert. It was Grian who had chosen to stay by his side, even after he didn’t have to anymore. It was Grian who had sat on the mountain with him, pointing out the stars and naming them.
It was Grian who had looked at him when they were the only two left, and had said there had to be a winner. It was Grian who had led him back to their mountain, hand in hand, and beat him to death in the shifting sands.
Grian remembered none of it.
OR,

Grian supposed his new masters were good people.
Every time he pushed a fraction further, fully prepared to be forcefully corrected in such blatant assumption…punishment would never come. Sure, he hadn't preened properly since he'd been at that hybrid market, to the point where he still had dirt caught beneath some of his primaries from the crash-landing he'd made in the yard about a month ago. Scar and Mumbo weren't bringing up the issue, he doubted they knew the intricacies of caring for an avian, and they hadn't noticed, considering how hard he'd worked to suppress his discomfort.
He didn't want to risk bothering them. He enjoyed his morning flights, his comfy nest, his warm red sweater, and no matter how hard he tried to believe they wouldn't take it for him, he still couldn't bear to be a nuisance. After all, his wings had been itching the entire time, but the sunrise had been beautiful.{In which Grian ignores his health, but what else is new, Mumbo is rather the unhelpful mercenary guild member, Gem needs a stiff drink, Pearl needs it more, and someone really does need to publish an avian care manual.}

“I don’t know if I could escape again,” Grian confesses, and Mumbo says-
“What if someone could find you?”
“What?”
Grian pulls away, and finally, this is something Mumbo can do with his hands. He leans back to look at him, eyebrows furrowing, and Mumbo rests his palms on Grian’s arms, holding him in place. “If you’re taken,” he says. “Would it be comforting to know that someone could find you?”
Grian laughs, and it’s not a good one, either, but it’s measures better than the hysterical one he’d let out earlier. “Mumbo, what?” he asks again. “I- I appreciate it, I do, but compasses are server-wide. They can’t even handle the Nether.” It’s not quite snarked but said with just enough of an 'I thought you knew this' tone that at any other time, it would be a hit to Mumbo’s redstoning ego.
“No, not a compass,” he dismisses. “You know, marriage. A spouse could find you anywhere. The whole… soul-bond thing.”
Okay, so he’s a redstoner, not a scientist.
Or: Grian has an issue. Mumbo proposes an... unconventional solution. There's no possible way marrying one another could go wrong.

Stress was proud to be the server medic.
Everyone always knew they could depend on her to arrive with her bright pink medic shulker and fix any injury or distress. From keeping preening forks for Grian, Pearl, or False’s wings, to extra faceplates for Xisuma’s helmet. Re-wiring Doc’s bionic enhancements, clippers for when Gem cracked a hoof while mining. Noise-canceling headphones for when Ren’s dog-like hearing grew overwhelmed. Raw steaks for when Cleo needed to satisfy her zombified hunger. Extra cane in case Scar broke his, which happened worryingly often. Cold compresses for if Jevin or Etho overheated, heat patches for if Tango fell in powdered snow again, even an extra set of PJs and a nightlight for Bdubs if the sun was going down and he went into a panic.
Stress took care of everyone. Always. But she'd never faced a situation like this, where everyone needed her to take care of them all at once. But she can't falter, or waste even a moment of time, because her friends come first. Even if she hasn't stopped to take scope of her own condition for hours now.

Grian had been watching the little island grow slowly but surely. He'd seen the ragtag group of misfits and outcasts patching each other's wounds and carrying each other to beds.
Meanwhile, he was here. In a dark room, with the hissing echo of their voices all around, that they'd finally take what was due to them, even if they hadn't upheld their end of the deal. It wasn't like Grian could argue, even if he tried, they could cause him pain merely with the thought of it. So he'd watch, instead, watch his friends amongst countless other worlds, all of which he had to keep tabs on or risk the punishment. The lessons were exhausting, and the Watchers were tireless. Grian was tired, though, because he wasn't a Watcher...not yet.
{In which Grian is stubborn to a fault, Xisuma puts in the extra hours, Pearl just wants her brother back, and watching a world grow is nothing like being within it.}

The worst part was the last few moments.
Straining for all he was worth, wings burning and aching with exhaustion built up to the roots. When his talons brushed the dirt, he felt the warning signs, pinpricks racing around his collar, letting him know he was about to make a mistake. Which wasn’t his fault. Grian was well aware of that much.
He’d crash-land anyway.
