Alan explored his memories of the past few months like someone gingerly handling an ancient scroll. Pieces slipped and crumbled. He remembered... Boarding the Lyric, setting off to London, rifling through the wealthiest passengers’ cabins for jewelry. Waking up sprawled across the floor of one of the cabins with Hawthorn holding him at gunpoint. After that, it was patchy, and got patchier the closer to the present he tried to recall.
The memory spell takes a bit better than Alan had hoped.

He only gave her a small smile again, as if he had an idea of what she was thinking. “Of course, Highness.”Maia is incapacitated for several weeks after being poisoned. Csethiro, with Csevet’s aid, keeps the Empire running while he recovers.

Summary
His feelings for Edrahasivar were something that he had never even planned to tell anyone about. It was a bit alarming to realize that Csethiro could read them so easily in their interactions, but at least she was— apparently— not the jealous sort. Leaving this up to Csevet to deal with, though, was... Excruciating. Understandable, but excruciating.
A few days of sick leave causes Csevet and Maia to appreciate each others’ company all the more. Csethiro makes well-founded but false assumptions about the Emperor’s relationship with his secretary.

Maia allowed himself one glance, which gave him a good view of, rather than Ciris’s expensive wallpaper, the determinedly neutral expressions of the emperor, Vedero, and Nazhira. They knew how thou wast living, he realised. They all knew. The emperor had said, we confess we know little of the circumstance, but there was a lot that one could contrive not to know if one was willing to put the effort in.
“Thou’rt a Drazhadeise Archduke now,” Ciris said, with every appearance of a man sharing some sort of generous nicety. He clapped him on the shoulder with slightly excessive force, and beamed. “Shouldst try to enjoy it! Eh?”
There was not, Maia found, a lot that one could say in response to that.Series

Summary
Kip Mdang returns to Solaara, hardly confident that the Imperial Service will take him back but sure that there is no place for him in the Vangavaye-ve.
The City of Cities is still expanding from the backwater village it was before the Fall; the work of reconstruction continues but it is no longer a simple crisis. In the Palace the big political beasts are circling for position under the newly awakened Emperor.
Despondent and determined to bury himself in work, Cliopher finds his former patron disapproving and the new Master of Offices openly hostile. But he is still a fifth degree secretary, and some problems are easier to solve when you feel that you have little left to lose... and don't care which enemies you make along the way.
