Summary
Alan explored his memories of the past few months like someone gingerly handling an ancient scroll. Pieces slipped and crumbled. He remembered... Boarding the Lyric, setting off to London, rifling through the wealthiest passengers’ cabins for jewelry. Waking up sprawled across the floor of one of the cabins with Hawthorn holding him at gunpoint. After that, it was patchy, and got patchier the closer to the present he tried to recall.
The memory spell takes a bit better than Alan had hoped.

Summary
“Who knows the Emperor’s mind better than his wife?” Csevet asked. She looked up at that to fix him with a pointed look, and he flushed slightly. “Well. That would be a whole other degree of scandal. They will accept thee, Csethiro. It is not permanent; they need only recognize thee as speaking for the Emperor until he is recovered.”
“Thou’lt help?” she asked him, a pleading note in her voice.
He only gave her a small smile again, as if he had an idea of what she was thinking. “Of course, Highness.”Maia is incapacitated for several weeks after being poisoned. Csethiro, with Csevet’s aid, keeps the Empire running while he recovers.

Summary
His feelings for Edrahasivar were something that he had never even planned to tell anyone about. It was a bit alarming to realize that Csethiro could read them so easily in their interactions, but at least she was— apparently— not the jealous sort. Leaving this up to Csevet to deal with, though, was... Excruciating. Understandable, but excruciating.
A few days of sick leave causes Csevet and Maia to appreciate each others’ company all the more. Csethiro makes well-founded but false assumptions about the Emperor’s relationship with his secretary.

Summary
Several minutes later, the three of them are clustered around Lore’s cellphone, trying to create Gawain a Tinder profile.
“How old are you?”
“Seventeen hundred years. Ish.” He pauses. “That’s not going to work. How old do I look in human years, Lore?”
“Forty-five,” she says without thinking, then claps a hand over her mouth as Guinevere cackles and Gawain flushes.
[Editor’s note: Gawain became a vampire at age twenty-eight.]
“Just say thirty,” Guinevere suggests, before he can retaliate.

Summary
When Anders returns blearily to consciousness the first thing he sees is the earthy ceiling of a cave, badly illuminated by a nearby campfire. The second thing he sees, when he turns his head, is a pair of luminescent eyes staring right at him.
“Maker!” Anders jerks upright, scrambling for his staff. His magic flares up in a sputtering, flimsy barrier. “What the—who the hell are you?”
The pair of eyes belongs to an elven man, crouching next to Anders, wearing traveler’s clothes and a neutral, calm expression. “Good. I see your body has recovered,” he says, evidently unfazed by both the shouting and the magic. He rises up—and up, and up; this stranger is tall—and turns back towards his campfire. “Do try not to make any more sudden movements though.”

Five (and a half) times Cliopher doesn't notice getting propositioned at the Jubilee, plus one time he does (and one time he does the propositioning).
response to a kinkmeme prompt: If Fitzroy decides to keep his name and fanoaship quiet during the Jubilee, he runs the risk of people finding out he and Kip aren't married yet and taking what they think is their last chance to shoot their shot with Kip. Bonus points if all the courtly euphemistic proposals continue to fly right over Kip's head but Fitzroy perceives every one and is Not Pleased.

Summary
Seivarden was still looking at me with some strange sad longing, as though I was a particularly good brandy she couldn’t afford. I didn’t understand then, although a slow awareness was growing in the back of my mind.
Maybe the awareness came later, and I’m only inserting it now out of pity for our younger selves. The feeling at the time was one of utter confusion.
“I know you don’t really want me around,” she said. “But—please.”
In which Breq navigates the mortifying ordeal of being wanted.
