Summary
Many ages ago, before the memory of all we speak of, perhaps before the Years of the Sun, there was a Ring unlike any other.
It was said that Melkor Lord of Fire fell from grace and was thrust from Arda, but what was not said is that he forged a Ring like that of his servant Sauron, and that this Ring had the power to raise not only Melkor, but any fallen being from the dead.
And there were other things left unsaid: that the Ring was taken from Melkor and called Reena-domë. That it could only be destroyed by casting it into the Secret Fire. That it would come to a hobbit-maid and be taken to save a man who felt he did not deserve salvation.
The will of Ilúvatar is clear: the Ring must be destroyed, and the siege of Minas Tirith must end. A new Fellowship forms to carry out these tasks, but one thing holds them back: the trust that Aragorn, the prophesied king of Gondor, cannot place in himself. A single choice on his part may prove to be Middle-earth's salvation or its doom, and one prophecy after another seems to suggest that, because of him, all is lost.
But there is hope yet, for destiny is not something to be found, but made, and there are some things that cannot be broken.

In Cloudgate, a minority of people have an aura, a supernatural power source for a special ability, or a curse, depending on how you look at it. In the past, many aura-havers had trained their auras into obeying their will, and these people were known as the mages. Many of these mages were part of guilds, but in a post-mage world where guilds are illegal and all auras are considered to be curses, becoming a mage is near impossible.
Skye Everson is a girl with an ice aura, something which lands her a lot of scorn. Though she's quite timid and doesn't want to attract attention, one of her greatest wishes is to become a mage, even in a world where magic is forbidden. After she learns of Avriya, a secluded part of Cloudgate where mages can train freely, Skye gets a shot at making her wish come true. And in addition to her training, Skye finds herself involved in the affairs of Cloudgate's spirit realm, including a prophecy and an uprising against a tyrannical goddess, both which connect to Cloudgate's supernatural predicaments in unexpected ways.
