Summary
Sometimes, they lie together in her bed, or maybe his, together but not touching. Just the presence of each other is all the comfort they need, and neither of them says anything until the morning comes. Other nights, it’s like this, as if it’s painful to keep their hands from each other.
Cassie can’t predict which mood Jake will be in.

“This gang ain’t gonna last much longer. Anyone with sense can see that. And when it all falls apart, I want you to come with us. Me, Abigail, and Jack.”
The tree’s rough bark digs into John’s hand. Arthur’s eyes are wide, and he shakes his head. “John, the way that I am, I’m not gonna last – “
John cuts him off. “I don’t want to hear that. Just think about it. Please.”
(John and Arthur and what could have been, maybe.)

“Proof of concept,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. “We’ve tested it thoroughly to ensure it fits the specified nutritional profile, and several members of our team have ingested small amounts of it to ensure there were no adverse effects.”
“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.
“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.
(OR: Grace's meburgers from the book epilogue. Let's talk about those!)

Summary
Theresa knows she must wait for him to excuse her. She knows this. Even without his celebrity in this town, his fine clothing is more than enough to indicate how this exchange is supposed to go.
But, he is yet to introduce himself. He is stuck in thought, and she can hear his mind keening, turning over itself.
He grips her arm. She is desperate to be elsewhere.
"Would you kindly excuse—"
"Sir Hans Capon of Leipa and Pirkstein," he says abruptly, and, with a smile, releases her—physically. His hand now free, he throws it in a gesture to the seat opposite. "Stay. Have a drink with me."
Theresa goes to fetch ale for her uncle and instead encounters an extremely irritating noble with his own petty agenda.
