Bill and Richie parked like stalkers or plainclothes cops outside the motel where Eddie’s team was staying and smoked another joint, listening to Songs of Love and Hate again. Richie called Bill a humorless bitch for not thinking it was funny to imagine the narrator of “Avalanche” just being some fucked up hunched-over dude using mind games to get people to mine ore for him.
The back door opened, and Eddie slid into the car. “Have you guys just been fucking waiting here?”
“There’s nothing to do here, dude,” Richie said. She held out the joint to Eddie, then thought to proffer a flask of whiskey stolen from her dad with her other hand. She wiggled both. “For the, uh—”
“Twenty-ninth in Maine for the 1600m,” Eddie said. Her eyes darted between the substances until she finally chose the flask.
