Summary
In many ways, taking on the role of father has been little more than a pantomime act. A mould he has haphazardly pressed himself into, but rarely has he felt the tight and ill-fitting walls of that mould more than right now, scrabbling for something to say.
Iris must see the conflict on his face. It is the sudden tilt to her head and the concerned worry in her lip that finally pushes the words into his mouth.
“It’s a marvelous story, my dear.” he manages at last, forcing a reassuring smile. It is not a lie. It is marvelous. Sholmes can appreciate good literature when he sees it and this, indeed, has all the hallmarks of a competent novella and would have impressed even if it had not been penned by an eight-year-old’s hand.

After the conclusion to the Professor Case, Sholmes takes a long-awaited vacation to Japan.

The doctors keep telling Phoenix he's lucky to be alive. And sure, maybe, but he doesn't feel particularly lucky at the moment. On the other hand, maybe he is pretty lucky to be able to witness the rapid deterioration of Miles Edgeworth's mental health through the increasingly panicked texts he's getting.
Was asking him to defend Iris too much? It... might have been. But if anyone can pull this off, it's Miles.
(Or: Bridge from the Turnabout, exactly the same as in canon except Phoenix gets texted updates as Miles fumbles around with "psycholocks" and the increasingly bizarre antics of Laurice Deauxnim.)
