“Oh, yeah? If it’s not scary, then why are you afraid?”
“I’m not.”
San had always adored Halloween. He loved seeing the little kids running around for candy, the people dressing up, all of the festivals and haunts that occurred once a year, and the comradery that came with the holiday. But, most of all, San absolutely adored being scared.
“You are. You’re afraid of me.”
“I am not afraid of you.”
“Then why can I smell how scared you are? The smell, the fear, is dripping off of you.”
Naturally, San gathered three of his closest friends and forced them to go with him to a haunt that Halloween. They were all dressed up, giddy, and ready to be slightly scared for their own amusement. What could possibly go wrong?

A few days ago, San woke up alone in a warehouse with a GPS implant in his leg and an earpiece in his ear, through which a male voice told him to do a job for them or become fish food. So San does the job, while his kidnapper watches his every move. Trying to carve out some freedom in any small way he can, one line has become the go-to outlet for his frustration. "Make me." It makes him feel better. Until the guy decides to take him up on it.

There he was again.
For the third time that week, San stood in line for coffee behind the tall man with the oval face. The stranger leaned over the glass case, eyeing rows of brightly colored macarons glittering like jewels. He wore the same gray cardigan, now paired with a new leather bag that looked expensive.
It wasn’t so strange, running into someone at the same café most days, even in a big city. People were creatures of habit.
The strange part was that San always came at a different time. Yet still, the man was there.
