It had been an accident.
All I knew was that one moment, I’d been getting torn to pieces by a raiding party breaching one of the airlocks, and in the next they’d been dead, and then ART’s full attention- nearly 100% of its processing power- had been flowing through me, and it had been probably the most fucked-up orgasm-adjacent Thing that anyone, organic or otherwise, had ever experienced.
Not least because one of my arms had been thrown across the room seconds before it had happened.

He walked back to the kitchen to finish the dinner he’d abandoned before wrangling Lou to sleep. He was a little tired, and he certainly wasn’t prepared for the sight that greeted him when he flicked the lights fully on in the kitchen. Standing at the edge of the room by the sliding glass doors stood a face that pulled on the parts of his memory Sam had been trying so hard to forget.

“Fight me,” Higgs gasps out, breath rasping against bruised ribs. His fingers tangle in Sam’s uniform, the dark blue stained in tar and the red smears of what the terrorist had become. He could scratch and claw or grab for his knife and end this once and for all with a stab into his unprotected side. Let his golden self bury deep into his flesh and meet his heart and spray out gore in victory.
He doesn’t know what part of him gave up first, that allowed his arms to drop and dangle limp outside of the man’s fury. What part allowed those heavy, leadened arms to drape over Higgs’ shoulders and rest there. No curled fists. No ill intent. Yet he feels the shiver of Higgs’ spine through the cloak and heavy armor that trills with dread for what hands will do to him. Maybe all they’ve ever done.
“No,” he declares. Because Sam is tired of it all. And so is Higgs.
