“I’m sorry, I’m doing this all wrong,” he says, his face scrunching up. He extends a hand to Evan through the window. “Hi, my name’s Jammer. I’m just passing through.”
“Hi, Jammer-I’m-Just-Passing-Through,” Evan says, smirking. He wipes his palm on his jeans to dry it as much as possible before taking the hand, overly conscious of whether it’s clammy or not. “I’m Evan. Do you- did you have any pronouns I need to be aware of?”
Jammer barks out a laugh and squeezes Evan’s hand, clasping it with his other for several incredible seconds. “You met K, then,” he says confidently.
“Yeah,” Evan admits. “They, uh, they said your car broke down?”

He finds Ellie right at the gate, back pressed to it and gun held out.
The sight of her makes him falter for just a moment. There’s no other word for her but wrecked. She’s far too thin, her cheekbones and the single collarbone he can see from where her shirt has slipped a bit under the strap of her backpack sharp, and there are dark circles under her eyes. She’s wearing a flannel that has to be Joel’s, though it’s rolled up to her elbows. On one forearm is a thick wad of dirty-looking bandaging.
On both arms are dark, splotchy bruises.
“-down. We’re not trying to hurt you,” George says. He’s a grandfatherly man, kind, even-tempered. He’s gotten tapped in to solve disputes and settle conflict more than once.
He is also, at a glance, winding Ellie up like a spring.

It’s a bit like trying on an old jacket, settling into Jackson. The general shape of it is familiar, even comforting in its own way, but there’s an adjustment period, a little breaking-in until everything fits like it should.
Well, it’s like an old jacket for him. The way Ellie looks sometimes, completely bewildered and turning to him for reassurance or clarification, he thinks it’s a bit more like trying on a Halloween costume for her.
Tommy and Maria had brought them their meals at first, and he’d at least been gratified to get some real food into her. After Silver Lake, she’d been off all meat for a long while, and in the hospital, exhaustion and pain had stolen what little appetite she’d managed to recover by that point. There’d been a little adjustment period here in Jackson, when they fell back on their routine of him taking bites of meat first to reassure her they were safe, but she’s slowly begun building back some flesh on her skinny little self, and it’s like he can feel a bit of his own restlessness settle with each plate of cheesy potatoes she downs with relish.

“Tommy’s here,” she informs him, sitting at their table and leaning forward to rest her head on her crossed arms. She’s not dizzy so much now, but she still gets tired easily.
“He brought food,” Joel responds, holding up a container before he puts it in the fridge.
“He’s still here,” she continues, and Joel just gives her a bemused little smile.
“Is he not meant to be?”
It’s said as a joke, but she barely resists the urge to frown. This is their house now. She doesn’t like the idea of Tommy just…existing inside it, especially when she’s not around.
Too much time for talking and catching up that way.
Too much time for letting Joel remember better days with a better kid.

“What’s going on?” Ellie demands, spitting like an angry cat, safe from her place behind Joel.
If she didn’t think she was probably about a minute away from getting her head bashed in if she doesn’t peace-make, she might find it cute. As it is, it’s sort of just fucking up her plan for how this would go.
“The scouts didn’t know it was Joel,” she says to her before she looks to him. Ellie’s her priority here, but Joel still looks capable of taking out any other threat he perceives, and she’d rather not be involved in a fight for her life. “You’re free to leave,” she tells him, and she doesn’t miss how Ellie holds on slightly tighter.
Or how Joel reaches back, just briefly, squeezing her arm in return.
“I’m not going anywhere,” he says, voice hard. “Not without her.”
“You did your job,” she says, a little confused. “We have vehicles here. Take your pick, we’ll give you whatever supplies you want.”
“I’m not leaving her,” he says. “You’re getting both or neither.”
Behind him, Ellie nods once, decisively.
She resists the urge to rub at her temples in response to the headache she can already feel forming.

Riley tears up one of her spare t-shirts so Ellie can wrap her arm up, but they have to change it twice before it stops soaking through. Weirdly, Riley’s hand doesn’t bleed as much. There’s a bit of blood, because, well, in teeth versus skin, teeth win, but she just dabs it away with a scrap of cloth and some water and it stops pretty quick.
Worried about making it bleed again, Ellie leaves the wrapping on hers for so long that neither of them notice that the whorls of infection on her arm don’t match the infection creeping up Riley’s arm.
Or: The one where Ellie bleeds a lot.

She thinks it’s a joke at first when she finds out that Joel’s a patroller, too. She’s a veteran, so it was a simple thing for her to be assigned to the work as well, but the idea of gentle, loving Joel with a gun in hand, fighting and killing, is almost laughably absurd.
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who spends hours on the porch with his daughter patiently teaching her guitar and think “yes, he’s good in a fight.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who regularly scoops up his fussy nephew and soothes him with an experienced parent’s deftness and think “yes, he’ll absolutely kill without hesitation.” She doesn’t know how anyone could look at the man who lets his teenager manhandle him to steal his food right off his plate because it makes her laugh and think “yes, he’s ruthless enough to take out a threat.”
She doesn’t know how anyone could look at Joel Miller and think he’d be a good patroller, and day by day, she worries about it more and more.

It’s partially down to his own interests; after Anna’s betrayal, he’d needed to make sure that no one else would ever be able to find out exactly how much information ended up spoken fuckdrunk and passed along.
It’s because of this access that he’s the first one who puts eyes on a file about the subject that allowed the Fireflies to get their miracle cure. There’s no names–well, no names that are true, he can tell from even a cursory glance–but there are notes that start to scratch at memories.
Female, 14 years old, raised in the Boston QZ, mother a Firefly, father unknown, 5’1”, 94 pounds at the start and 83 by the end of testing, medical history unknown by virtue of being an orphan.
It’s a rough sketch, a vague idea of a person that could fit anyone.
But somehow, in the part of himself that’s made him one of the best spymasters FEDRA has in its employ, he just knows.
The Firefly’s miracle girl is his daughter.
