"Yes," she says, standing up and extending her hand for a handshake. She has a diplomatic smile on her face, charming and practiced to perfection. Mira can hardly imagine what it's like to be on the receiving end of it.
Dr. Choi, however, is apparently immune. She puts one hand on her waist and looks up at Rumi with a glare. She holds Rumi's client file up with her other.
"Rumi-nim, respectfully, this is the worst intake form I've ever seen in my life. "
Mira holds back a snicker.

The vampire looked down slowly at the mess on her clothes, then back up.Rumi’s heart slammed against her ribs like it wanted out.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me,” the girl said, her voice cold and flat.
Rumi stepped forward without thinking, pressing the flimsy paper napkin against the slick black leather covered in her lunch.
“I—I’m so sorry,” she stammered, every syllable tripping over the last. “I didn’t mean—I wasn’t looking and—”
“You didn’t mean to walk straight?” the vampire snapped, voice slicing clean through her apology. “Or use eyes that work?”
Up close, the vampire’s presence hit like a cold front.
Terrifying, her instincts offered.
Beautiful, her brain added unhelpfully.
And here she was… rubbing at her chest.
The motion was clumsy and awkward—her brain screaming at her to help clean while her hands were busy doing exactly the kind of contact you’d never want to initiate with a stranger.

Rumi ignored her chest squeezing.
“-A stunning girlfriend, Mira. I mentioned her, right? My girlfriend Mira-” The woman stopped abruptly and lowered her head down into her arms. “Jeez, Zoey, stop rambling at the deaf woman.” It was muffled, but Rumi heard it.
Silenced by grief, Rumi’s world is transformed when she crosses paths with Mira and Zoey, who guide her toward a voice she thought was lost forever.

Rumi dragged a hand down her face. She hadn’t even meant to hide this.
Not like she’d hidden the patterns. It just hadn’t come up, and she was a private person anyway, and she wasn’t just going to bring it up out of nowhere. Besides, hiding the patterns had made it easy. The hoodies, the bathhouse, the carefully designed costumes…they all worked for more than one thing.
She didn’t want to miss Zoey and Mira anymore. Sure, they’d always have their own things. That was obvious. But she wanted to be part of their lives again. Wanted them to be part of hers.

Zoey’s eyes narrowed at the mention of Mira’s name.
“I’ll make that promise. But only if you tell me the truth about her too. When you ran out on me last night, you ran to her. You were gone all night and somehow, Mira knew more about it than I did. And now you tell me that she’s the one to call if you’ve lost control of yourself?” Zoey’s voice had started off angry, but the notes of sadness were undeniable at the end.
“Zoey… I can’t tell you. Not everything. About Mira.” Her mouth twisted, not quite a smile. “It’s like how I couldn’t tell you directly that I was a vampire.”
“So Mira’s a vampire too?!”
Rumi huffed softly, a bitterness in her laugh. “No. God, no. Unfortunately, she’s not. But...she’s not human either. She could keep you safe. From me"
