Summary
As with any sporting event, the Poughkeepsie Regatta has its traditions and rituals. Some of these are stoic and dignified. Some are not.
The post-race “revenge” against the coxswains is very much in the latter category.

The reality is that Don is feeling too much for a man who should just be one of his best friends. And Don does cherish that friendship, more than anything, but he can’t let this continue. If he does then one day it’ll all come out, either in a touch that lasts too long or in words Don won’t be able to keep holding back, and it’ll destroy him. Hell, it might destroy them both: if Bobby was to realise the sorts of things his dear friend has been wanting and thinking and dreaming of, surely that would gut him too.
Don has been in love with Bobby almost since meeting him. When some asshole throws a crude insult into the mix it nearly drives the tall stroke insane - and forces the situation to a head.

It’s just… I don’t have a gift, and we don’t exactly have any extra money right now. I was thinking of doing something nice at the pottery class but it completely slipped my mind and now I don’t know if I have the time. I’m working the closing shift at the café again, and promised to open the bookstore tomorrow morning for Marge.”
