sam winchester was all too familiar with pain. physical, emotional, mental; somatic, visceral, and neuropathic. he knew what it felt like to have a concussion, to sit on a grimy motel floor while your older brother carefully sutured the flesh of your abdomen, to be shot at and kicked and punched.
but nothing could ever compare to the excruciating pain he experienced when he had a migraine.

The kid is shivering now, and the sheen on his sickly white skin is almost glowing in the overhead lights. Dean stands over him for a moment, a wall of deja vu slamming into him so hard he almost sways on his feet. How had he done this when he was nine, when he was six, when he was four and baby Sammy was in his arms and he was running out onto the front lawn as their childhood home burst into flames?
How has he had so much practice with taking care of Sam, yet his heart still races, his palms still slick with sweat? How is it that he’s done this a hundred times over, and he’s still so damn terrified?

Summary
It's got to be okay. Dean came for him like he always swore he would, he came and he looked deep past the devil into the very heart of Sam. He was the righteous man, just like the prophecies promised, and he took all of the power of his immense capacity for belief and channeled it right into his little brother and let Sam pull two archangels into a cage. That Sam had to fall in, too, well—it seemed like a small price to pay.

Summary
Except this time, Sam doesn’t pick up on what starts the fight, too focused on figuring out how to derive the stupid equation. He only looks up when John’s voice rises and his fist swings towards his eldest son’s face.
Sam lets out a shout of disapproval, but it’s either ignored or just not heard, and John’s fist makes contact with the side of Dean’s face in a rather unflattering way. His older brother doesn’t even stumble at the punch, just readjusts so that he doesn’t fall over from the force.
ie dean and sam debate their father and his merits
