Summary
Paul had known Richie was a sad kid. He'd only heard stories second-hand from family. Paul hadn't known the extent of it until the kid showed up. Every time he visited Richie's parents, he had seemed perfectly polished, almost like his entire demeanour was rehearsed.
Richie had shown up in the middle of the night when he was freshly twelve. He was cagey at first. He let Paul take him back home without much resistance. Paul would go back to work. He wouldn't worry about the kid all day, unable to get his haunted eyes out of his head. Paul certainly wouldn't wonder why he took the kid back home when he clearly left for a reason. When he'd trusted Paul to do something.

“I don’t wanna go back out there.” Max rested his head against the wall, closing his eyes. Like he was trying to escape reality. Richie knew the feeling. It was easier to pretend he was somewhere else most of the time.
“You don’t have to. The game isn’t over for another-”
“In general.” Max cut across him. “I meant, just in general. I don’t want to go out there. I don’t want to face–anyone.” It took Richie a long time to figure out what the tremble in Max’s voice was expressing. He was frightened. Richie had his guesses as to what, or who, he was afraid of.
He hesitated. For a long time.
“You could-” He was saying it now. The words were tumbling out of his mouth before he could stop them. “You could stay with me and Paul for a while.”
OR:
Max injures himself during a game and he doesn't want to go home.

Richie pulled out his phone, noting the fact that no one had bothered to text him and ask why he wasn’t in school. He would stew in that later, he had more pressing matters on his hands. There was also a notification for an article about some meteor that crashed into the Starlight Theatre last night. He swiped it away, dismissing it as nothing. If it was important, Paul probably would’ve told him. Paul told him everything. He pulled up Paul’s contact, calling him and holding the phone up to his ear.
He waited, and the call rang out.
Weird. Maybe he was busy today.

Richie wasn’t really sure why Max bothered him so much, or why he even cared. He always found himself trying to impress people who weren’t worth the effort. Ruth and Pete had always accepted him as he was. but there was a part of him that longed for more than that. He wanted to be liked, not just tolerated.
Just being seen with Richie was something to be mocked and ridiculed, which meant being Richie was much, much worse. He didn’t think it was so outlandish to want to be included. To finally be a part of something without being the punchline. It would be nice to finally be a necessary piece of the puzzle instead of something disposable.

“Remember when we'd come here everyday after school?” Richie was really trying to remember it fondly, but there was a veil over almost anything Max related. Max just hummed quietly, lost in his thoughts. Richie wished he knew what went on in his head. Things would make a lot more sense if he understood his brain. He barely understood his own, so there was no hope there.
“I would always swing you as high as I could, even though you were scared of heights.” Max was smiling, but there was a kind of bitterness laced beneath it.
“I didn't mind.” Richie muttered, kicking at the pebbles in front of the swing.
“I didn't either.”
