He sighs, charcoal smudged fingers leaving grey marks on his cheeks as he drags a hand over his face. The crow he’s studying hops closer, squawking indignantly when it sees Stiles drawing.
“I’m trying,” Stiles mutters. The crow squawks again, hopping back along the branch. The setting sun casts a warm orange glow through the gaps in the treetops. His mother will probably come collect him for dinner soon; he needs to get this right before the light fades.

...but Stiles was never the villain in Peter's narrative, and Peter can't say the same is true for himself. Try as he might, there is a wound there that he won't be able to heal. Stiles chooses him, and it knits over, but when things get difficult, Peter can see it bleeding sluggishly, and there's nothing he can offer him to stop the bleeding. Their history brings them together and it is the wedge that will always exist to drive them apart. It's no easy thing, to have your undoing so close to the glue holding you together. But they make it work. Or, well, they've made it work. Maybe it's more dividing than Peter's ever known.

Stiles was six minutes late to his meeting with the Hale Pack of Northern California, head still spinning from the last six interviews he'd been to. He stumbled into the room and collapsed into the chair across from the two wolves.
"Mieczysław?" the man asked, getting it almost perfectly right. He must have practiced. "Would you like some water?"
Stiles nodded and accepted the bottle gratefully, downing almost all of it in just a few gulps. He put the bottle down and wiped his face, feeling horribly embarrassed and disheveled, especially compared to the two sitting across from him, both of them very attractive, dressed in neat, well-fitting suits.
"It must be pretty overwhelming," the man said. "All these meetings with all these packs, all wanting you to be their emissary."
"Yeah," Stiles exclaimed. "And I'm supposed to choose where I want to spend my life and who I want to bond with just like that."
The man smiled and slid a folder across the table to him. "I hope you don't mind one more choice."
