    Zelda blinks. “Sorry?”

He doesn’t look away. Funny Link. He doesn’t give up on putting his thoughts into words because he’s bad at public speaking but good at disaster, good at taking things apart, terrible at gluing them back together. Funny Link. He doesn’t breathe. When was the last time he breathed? Should she kiss him?

“It’s not okay, princess,” he says, and he sounds so goddamn sad, she has to stop laughing in her head for five whole minutes. “None of this is okay. Please don’t pretend it is. Please let me help you.”

The first rule of time travel: don't.

She’s afraid of closing her eyes.

She hopes he doesn’t notice, but it’s Link. After all these years, he sees right through her.

    Or —

Zelda doesn't remember much from her time as a dragon, but she remembers the excruciating loneliness all too well. It terrifies her.

    Summary

A ghost told Link a story once. In this story, everyone died on a burning field.

There were two survivors –– the lovelorn princess and her battered knight, cursed in cruel mercy to a century in purgatory and a memory so shattered and broken that it was impossible to put the shards back where they fit.

He learned atop the Temple of Time, the dilapidated ruins where his ancestors’ ancestors’ ancestors once stood, that Hyrule had sustained itself on nothing more than stories for ten thousand years. Evil collected underneath the marble floors of Hyrule Castle for centuries. Hyrule had almost unlimited time to find a way to stop it, and yet they waited for two characters out of a fable to save them. Why was anyone surprised when the myth couldn’t sustain itself? Salvation is not the job of two children, regardless of the lofty titles placed over their heads.

But this isn’t a story about a knight. It’s not a story about a princess. This is a story about the aftermath of stories.

This is, ostensibly, a story about a dog.

Link, Zelda, and a never-ending story.

Zelda has a very special bond with Link: a bond that allows her to speak with him telepathically. What if this ability was one that came to her much earlier than the rest of her powers? This story is an exploration of how this ability began and evolved over time, for Zelda and also for Link.

Or, 5 times Zelda initiated telepathic communication with Link, and 1 time Link was able to reach out to Zelda.
