Summary
Marius traces his jaw, trails him thumb over his lower lip. “Tell me I thaw you, Amadeo,” he says. “Let me believe it.”
Below the surface of the ice there is an angry and roiling sea, a dark and swirling thing. Amadeo wonders if Marius has forgotten it, if he thinks it had been a cold creature which had held an axe at his door.
“You thaw me, sir,” Amadeo says, and he believes it himself—but he keeps his voice passionless, obedient, and that too is a sort of defiance.
Marius laughs at him, Marius pinches his cheek.“My own Galatea, hewn of ice,” he says, “and how beautiful you are.”
Amadeo thinks of the bright-eyed boys running barefoot through the house below, thinks of the statues and the paintings in the house, of the richly planted gardens, the stuffed beasts. He imagines Marius wrapping beautiful black rope about his wrists and hoisting him up, crucifying him on the wall next to the paintings. Thinks of the fetching contrast of the ropes against his skin, their fine glimmer. He would use silk, so dark in color that Amadeo’s blood would not show.
“And how glad I am,” he says, “how glad I am to be beautiful.”
* * *
Marius and Amadeo escape the fire together.

Summary
ISO: Carer to look after my father for 8 weeks this summer.
Dad is 71, early stage Parkinson’s disease, broke his hip 6 weeks ago. No signs of cognitive decline; mostly needs help with household tasks (cooking, light cleaning, laundry, grocery shopping), getting dressed, showering, changing cat litter/general cat care, getting to and from appointments.
Please know what you are getting into; Dad is physically more or less in good health but awful at accepting his limitations, unnecessarily mean, generally uncooperative, and largely nocturnal. Imagine yourself caring for a feral raccoon that is convinced it’s going to write another book, then subtract everything that is cute about raccoons.
$20/hour, roughly 4 hours a day. Must be able to pass a background check and lift 50 lbs. Patience of a saint not required but preferred. -
