Summary
Ed, with his bare feet and windswept hair and free spirit and saltwater crystals clinging to his skin. He says things, uncustomary things, that Stede’s mother would faint at the sound of. He’s different from anyone Stede has ever spent time with--he dances under streetlights when he’s had too much rum, he smokes funny cigarettes that make him go all flushed and affectionate and giggly, he has homemade tattoos and the most beautiful mind. Not to mention his eyes, brown and doe-like with twinkling stars sprinkled in them, with which he looks at Stede like he’s someone of importance.

Summary
“Enjoy this moment,” she says with a playful glint in her eye, sliding a sheet of paper across the counter for him to take, “because you’re never going to go back to this time before you met your deskmate Dwight.”
And that’s when Jim knows.

Summary
“What do you want me to do with your face?”
Ed can think of several things. He has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep himself from letting out a fucking giggle. Is he going to become someone who giggles, too? Iz might actually die. “Your call, Captain, this is obviously your thing.” And then, only because he can’t help himself: “Do whatever you want to me.”
“Oh! Well. That’s—well,” Stede stammers, turning a lovely shade of pink right before Ed’s eyes. Okay, that may have been a bit too much, then. Oops.

Summary
Realization strikes Minho. “Wait, so... the only reason why you told him how you feel is because you thought you were gonna die.”
Newt grunts in response.
“And you took the letter back yesterday ‘cause you’re still alive and scared of Thomas’ answer.”
“Brilliant observation,” Newt deadpans.

Summary
So far he’s known Ellie at fourteen and Ellie at fifteen, and the gaps in his knowledge of her are so vast they seem to fill every spare inch of conscience he has. There’s so much unaccounted for time, times where people did things to her he couldn’t protect her from, times where people hurt her or bullied her or made her feel small, undeserving, useless, unloved.
**
Ellie grows up, a little. It sort of breaks Joel’s heart, a lot.

Bookmarker's Notes
He thinks about those kids, but mostly he thinks about Ellie: what kind of kid was she? What did she look like at two or five or seven? What was her first word? When did she lose her first tooth? Did anyone ever hug her, or rub her back when she was sleepy, or feed her little pieces of ice when she was sick?
this made me cry
How, he thinks, did he ever live without this? Without her?

Summary
They’ve got a sliver of light left this evening, long enough that Ellie can make some progress on whatever she chooses to read first. Though he’d never admit it to her and is barely able to admit it to himself, Joel’s hoping that after the sky’s too dark to read any further, she’ll recount the story out loud.
Joel catches an eye of the book cover when she slides it out of her backpack. It’s not the red hardback novel, it’s not the blue one, and he doesn’t see mountains, so it must be the fourth book: the one she’s keeping secret from him.
Ellie gets a new book, then loses it, and finds it again. Meanwhile, Joel grows closer to Ellie, then loses her, and then finds her again.

Summary
“I thought it would be nice if you came over for dinner at ours sometime. It’s me, and my husband, and our two boys. I’m sure you’ve seen them around school?”
Now that she mentions it, she does recognize the name. The Erikson boys are nice enough, one older than her, one younger. Both humongous. Just like their mother, who is towering over Ellie as they speak.
“That’s…nice,” Ellie says, uncomfortable. “But, um. Why?”
Mrs. Erikson smiles. “Because, dear. I thought it would be good for us all to get to know each other. Seeing as Tommy Miller came and talked to us about the possibility of you coming to live with us.”
or:
A series of misunderstandings has Ellie doubting her place in the Miller family. The remaining Millers do their best to show her where she belongs.

beautiful and perfect. i could see everything so clearly. and tommy’s lovely in this 😭
He wishes he had the words to convince her that he regrets the years not spent with her and not the other way around. Spends too much time thinking about what he would do if he woke up ten or twelve years in the past - how he’d find her.

Summary
When Joel is out on patrol with Jesse again, he finds that he’s starting to enjoy the boy’s company, because at least he isn’t scared of Joel looking at him.
“Jesse,” he grunts one morning, swatting a tree branch in the warm air.
The boy stops in the middle of his useless anecdote about something or other. “Yeah?”
“Are people scared of me?”
