Summary
Spending the summer in Hawkins had been wonderful - they’d moved back in the middle of June, integrating into their new home and re-familiarizing themselves with the town. Their friends had, of course, welcomed them with open arms, and the rest of the summer had been spent like it always had - hanging out around town, taking over Steve’s pool and abusing his summer job at the video store, sleepovers in Mike’s basement and afternoons at the arcade.
It had been wonderful, yet also overwhelming.
One thing he hadn’t missed in California, was the agony of being close to Mike.
The kicker of that, of course, is that there had been the agony of being away from Mike.
Will’s conclusion is that he’s just meant to suffer.

Summary
Will’s best friend is a vampire.
He can’t say that doesn’t excite him a bit.
They’re in Mike’s basement, and he’s sitting on the stairway as he’s playing one of the mixtapes Mike had made for him when they first started dating. Robert Smith’s voice is blaring the lyrics to Just Like Heaven as Will sketches in his notebook; a new sketch of Will the Wise, casting fireball against the Thesselhydra.
He casts his gaze over to Mike, who’s draped across the couch. He has a hand over his eyes, and his skin is almost shimmering. His cheekbones are somehow even more defined than usual.
Will’s best friend is a vampire, and he’s still adjusting to that fact.
(Or: Mike is a vampire, and Will wants to help him with his hunger.)
