“Boo!”
Gale flung back in his seat, heart shooting up to his throat and he nearly flipped back out of his chair.
Astarion’s floating head cackled from the window, soon becoming his shoulders and arms, and then the rest of him as he climbed into the room. “You should have seen the look on your face—”
“You know I hate it when you do that.” Gale fought to keep his voice even, gulping down the sudden dryness in his mouth.
“And yet you always leave your window open.”

“You aren’t dying on me are you?”
“Certainly not.” Gale tells him, but his eyes stay closed and he’s tilting back into the chair enough that Astarion has to shift up to follow. He’s warm, but he is always warm and Astarion hasn’t eaten since yesterday evening, so his own chill skin is hardly a good measure. “I plan to shackle you with my company for many years to come, my love.”

Just days after Gale asked Astarion to marry him, the wizard had the utter audacity to not only fall ill, but deny he was until he was hacking and wheezing with every breath he took. “I was hoping you’d come back,” Gale said without thinking. He winced internally, all too aware of how desperate he sounded.
“Were you, now?” Astarion tilted his head ever so slightly, amber eyes roaming every inch of his face.
Not trusting his voice, Gale just nodded, and Astarion ducked his head closer, so close he could smell the faint citrusy scent of his skin.
“And…what were you hoping for, darling?” His voice was nearly a whisper, lips close enough to his ear that he could feel the heat of his words.Gale swallowed hard before finally finding his voice. “I was wondering what you meant by next time,” he said, pulling back to look the other man in the eyes.

The moment he does, Cazador's second line of defense takes over, and he transforms into a small bat with no real way to defend himself against the sunlight or the wildlife around him. Summary
His first hunger had been to be known by Mystra, then touched by Mystra, loved by Mystra, and then he had only ever wanted to be her equal.
His second hunger had morphed from the first, becoming a craving for the mysterious magic that would surely force Mystra to recognize Gale as hers and hers alone. All he ended up with was a bomb in his chest that was more ravenous than Gale could ever imagine.
Astarion had been the third hunger.

Summary
Astarion found Gale sitting silently at the edge of a cliff. The mountain pass valley stretched out far below, trees dotting the rock faces and rustling softly in the evening breeze. Far beyond, Rosymorn Monastery stood solid, austere, even as parts of its facade crumbled down into the abyss. In the low light of sunset, the entire landscape was washed golden and warm.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?” said Gale, when Astarion took a few steps closer. Although he might still have been speaking to himself, by the way he kept staring out across the mountains. By his distant, wistful tone. “I must admit, I’m rather something of a chronic city dweller. I’d hardly ever left Waterdeep, before—all this.”
He let out a short laugh. Any humor in it was drowned in the undertow of…whatever that dark, heavy thing was in his voice. He kicked one heel back against the rockface, sending debris tumbling down into the valley, and cast another long glance over the pass.
“I’m glad I got the chance to see nature in all of its true splendor at least once, though,” Gale said softly. “The paintings hardly do justice to such an open expanse of nature. The majesty of it all steals my breath away.”

Summary
Astarion was thoroughly confused by his boss. He had been hired as a personal assistant, but Astarion hardly sees him. Gale Dekarios leaves him notes on the fridge with a list of tasks to do and that he’s upstairs if Astarion has any questions. He knows he is real and he’s not just hallucinating: he’s seen far too many empty coffee pots and can constantly hear him moving around.

(Later, much later, Astarion will tell Gale that he’s an insomniac and has been for years, and they will begin their midnight meetups in Gale’s apartment. He will eventually make a home amongst Gale’s books and art, and he will leave a mug for coffee or whiskey in the kitchen. Before that, Astarion will apologize for their initial meeting over that same bottle of wine, and they will almost, almost kiss. But for now, he just waits for Gale to stutter out a farewell, then slams the door in his face.)

He can’t decide if he wants it more because of the luring whispers it sends urging through his mind, or because of the snarl that curls on Astarion’s face every time his eyes fall on Gale while he’s holding the clearly cursed book.
In all fairness, it was Astarion who had picked the old rusted lock on the iron gate. Astarion who’s nimble fingers had dismantled the trap before their feet. Astarion who’s perceptive eyes had caught the pressure-plate trap the moment before Wyll had managed to grab the book off the plinth, and dissembled it safely.
If not for Astarion, either their ramshackle party or the dusty text would be still lying prone beneath the blighted village, possibly incinerated.
Gale’s not interested in fairness.
